    No it's not.

It's an overcompensation in the present for past wrongs. It is affirmative action and it is the distortion of language to avoid irritating people.

Example: I have a friend who works with a queer gender neutral individual. She might be sex positive, too--I can't recall. She refuses to use the word "straight" when giving directions, and instead uses "forward". She objects to the use of phrases like "thanks, guys" at the ends of emails. She imposes--or attempts to impose--her sensitivities (most of which are based in some logic, I will admit, albeit taken to an extreme) on others.

That is political correctness. And it is not just another term for treating everyone the same.

I don't think avoiding the term straight in directions is at all an example of political correctness. It's just being an obnoxious ass who wants attention.

    "That is so gay."
"He tried to jew me out of $100."
"I got totally gypped at the grocery store."

All of these are insensitive comments that are no bueno, according to political correctness. I don't use them, myself, but I don't think that anyone's being a pompous ass for looking down on them. Similarly, people who reject the standard sexual categories can take offense at the use of "straight" as an adjective. I find it obnoxious, but I also think it's a part of political correctness.

I agree with the three examples you give there. Straight? That's just someone hunting for a reason to be difficult. You say something is gay, you can at least see easily why some might be offended. Saying go straight to the store, and someone says that is offensive, I think the majority of people would have no clue how that could be offensive to anyone.

I'd say that there's a discrete difference between your three examples and avoiding the original and literal use of "straight." In the three examples you just gave, a group identifier is being used as a pejorative, associating those groups with a negative sentiment. The same isn't true of saying that a restaurant is straight ahead.

Whether we want to call it "political correctness" or "basic decency," I believe in not using the labels of groups of people as pejoratives. I don't think that we should avoid using the original intent of words because they've been utilized for other things, by and large.

Queer, *****rdly (see? Even our checker catches it...) and any other number of words are basically off-limits now because of oversensitivity. I can see how a portion of the population would, under the auspices of "basic decency" attempt to continue to manipulate language.

And that manipulation is sometimes for the good, of course. Only history can be the judge. :)

I think that those who think political correctness is just a redefinition of treating everyone the same are kidding themselves, in any case.

I wouldn't say queer, in it's original form, is off-limits. People might choose not to use the word, because of the risk of confusion as to which definition they're using, but I've never heard of anyone becoming offended over using "queer" to mean "peculiar." It's true that "*****rdly" has become off-limits, mostly because many people (it seems to me) aren't sure of whether it pre-dates the racial epithet or comes from the racial epithet.

But I would still maintain that that is different from purposely using group identifiers as pejoratives. You are talking about people manipulating language to prevent offense, but I'd suggest that the first three examples you used were an example of manipulating the language (at least originally) in order to be offensive. They weren't random mutations of language, that people later become offended by.

Political correctness is about power, plainly and simply. Control the language and you can control thought.

See? This is why we agree to disagree. You've run out of intellectual arguments, so all you have left is cheap quips. Welcome to the world of two other posters on this site.

It was a dumb question. We all know that only Mormons should make people feel uncomfortable on a flight.
