New York Daily News cartoonist and columnist Bill Gallo, known for his playful characters, has died. He was 88.

The paper said Gallo died Tuesday from complications of pneumonia at White Plains Hospital.

Daily News chairman and publisher Mortimer Zuckerman told the paper Gallo's death marks the end of an era.

Some of Gallo's memorable characters include a depiction of New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner as General Von Steingrabber. Gallo said in a column last year he chose the moniker because Steinbrenner grabbed so much of the newspaper's space.
