The Los Angeles Lakers are taking a deliberate approach to their search for a successor to Phil Jackson, but NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com the team has added Mike Brown to its list of candidates. The former Cleveland Cavaliers coach, now working as an analyst for ESPN, is expected to interview "soon" with the Lakers, sources say. who's gonna be our lebron if we hire this guy?... sheesh... i dont even know why we are considering him.
Apparently they've already outlined a contract. This is a cost cutting measure for the team. At least we should improve on the defensive side of the ball.
I can't say that I'm a huge fan of this hire, but at least the defense SHOULD get better under Brown, assuming he does get the job.
It's official Mike Brown is the new head coach. 4 year deal worth $18M. The contract is a three-year deal with a team option for a fourth year. If the Lakers don't pick up the option, Brown is guaranteed to receive $2.5 million.
"We're not going to continue exclusively with the triangle," Buss told Playboy Radio's Michael Eaves and Bonnie-Jill Laflin. "Certainly, there will be facets of the triangle incorporated into any modern offense." Brown would be likely to implement an offensive system similar to what the San Antonio Spurs run, which includes triangle principles, according to a Western Conference coach familiar with Brown's career. Brown was an assistant coach in San Antonio from 2000-03. Lakers brass did not consult Bryant during their coaching search, but sources say Bryant has great respect for Brown and is on board with the hiring.
I love the signing, defensively. God help us, offensively. Hopefully Brown can control Kobe's ego. I can't take a full season of watching Kobe go ISO.
The more I read about how this went down the more I don't like this signing. Mike Brown was basically the cheapest of the 3 coaches the Lakers were considering (Adelman & Shaw being the other two.) Jim Buss was the person pushing to sign Mike Brown (the same guy who pushed for the team to hire Rudy T.) Kobe Bryant was never consulted about the team going in this direction. Kobe already has a bad relationship with Jim Buss from the whole Laker "insider" fiasco a few seasons ago. Mike Brown doesn't want to feature the Triangle offense anymore. Why would you want to use a different offense when your core is familiar with it and the team went to three straight NBA Finals running it? This team's window of opportunity is already closing and maybe there's 2 years left to try and win with this group. Learning a new offense isn't going to happen overnight, ESPECIALLY if there is a lockout and players and coaches can't practice and breakdown film together. I know Jerry & Jim Buss where never fans of the Triangle offense despite the results. Maybe this was the selling point along with saving money.
