Okay so even though the NBA's mandated insurance policy; which excluded his knees because of his condition prior to the signing of the contract, Roy's contract can be removed off cap, as long as the Blazers still pay the 100% of the salary? I thought I read it different.

Correct. The insurer's exemption list is all of high risk players that the insurer won't cover. If a player on that list can't finish their contract the team pays the full tab, instead of getting an 80% benefit.

Any guesses on whether or not Oden's next contract falls under this clause?

Every team in the league knows his knees are shot! He can sit on our bench or someone elses. We know that he's a cancer in the locker room, his cry baby tactics in the playoffs are a dress rehearsal for next year, beleive that! I think if he's not starting he needs to be let go.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

    Wrong.

Roy had better advanced stats across the board, and had a PER of 16.4 compared to Matthews 12.8.

    Roy had a better Ortg (118 to 114), a better Drtg (117 to 118), better assist % (23 to 5), shot better from the field (50% to 49%), more rebounds/game (2.2 to 1.2), more WS/48 (.1 to .06), a better turnover % (7 to 10), all while playing 9 mpg less than Matthews.

Matthews had one decent game. The rest of the time, he was terrible. Simply terrible, and a big reason the team lost.

maybe you should all stop being so negative.....he beat the soon to be 2011 NBA champs by himself for a game. something kobe and durant failed to do. some people just have a nac for putting the ball in the hoop and roy has that. i think he deserves atleast one year after the injury to prove himself before all you asshole fans start throwing him off the bus....yes i just called you assholes:ghoti:

I love Roy and all he has done. Trust me I really do. If there is an amnesty clause, no question you use it on him 3 seconds after the CBA is signed. Would it be tampering to have him medically retire, then have him as a Max Contract "Community Ambassador"? :)

    Re: dont care

The only way we are going to lose Roy is there is an amnesty clause. I don't know how the talk of management asking him to retire came about but thats just plan flat retarded on many levels. Upper management can't be so stupid that they would actually consider this because there is no way a player would leave so much money on the table. Trying for a backhanded deal were they get him to retire and keep paying him would just add to how horrible management looks at the moment and the players union would be ALL over us about it.
As it is we can either wait for the amnesty clause or tell his knees give out to the point were he has to medically retire which will probably be in 4 years.

Temper tantrums are fun! (Seriously, I enjoy reading them.)

Roy should do what's best for him and the team should do what's best for them. I tend to agree that asking Roy to retire is beyond silly, because there's no reason why he would or should walk away from all the cash he negotiated (while looking out for his best interests). If an amnesty comes along to cut him from their cap structure, the Blazers should absolutely do so. In a hard cap environment, that cap savings will be crucial.

Hmm guess I don't understand how Medically retirement works. If he gets paid full and it goes off of our books that makes pretty much everything I said irrelevant.

    Re: dont care

Is an asshole better than a moron? Cause if you can't figure out how to grow back his meniscus we are all screwed for this type of money and production he doesn't have nightly anymore! He's going to be effective 1-5 games as we've seen. He will not be an allstar again and he's being paid allstar money. Let's add to the fact that when Roy had that amazing game against the Mavs in the playoffs he took all the shots while his teamates watched, when he's off the team loses playing this way. Is that hard to understand? Our offense is stagnet when he's the focal point and players like LA and Crash wont be utilized properly! Let's not even go into the fact he can't move fast enough now nor has Roy ever shown the ability to play a lick of defense. You think this bone on bone reality is going to get magically better with a full season of pounding and cutting to the hoop? Why are people still thinking that he just needs rest? He has no shock absorbers for his knees....There is no upside for this condition. If there was I'm sure as much of a Washington homer as Paul Allen is he'd never even think of this option for his golden boy Roy!

If Roy gets Amnesty, mark my words he'll sign with the L*kers and win a ring in a reserve/grant hill type role. Can you live with yourselves knowing that?

If LA doesn't land Howard, LA has no shot of beating the Heat! Roy will not matter a bit!

I'd only feel discouraged if Roy became a high-level player again after the Blazers cut him. I don't anticipate that. If he wins a title with another team, Lakers included, as essentially the player he is now--an inconsistent reserve--it wouldn't bother me a bit. The Blazers won't have lost out on anything significant.

Re: Blazers may ask Roy to retire?

Not many pro athletes will give up salary for that reason. And you could make a case that he deserves another year's pay as compensation for how well he played on his rookie contract.

If he would take a medical retirement, and clear the space, that would probably be best for the Blazers. Paul Allen is going to give away most of his fortune, and it would be nice to see more of it go to charity than to all the bozo's the Blazers have signed over the years, Kemp, Stoudamire, Roy, Anderson, Ratliff.......

So, he lacks integrity if he tries to get better and get on the court to help the team, which he did in the playoffs?

    What a foolish statement.

Why would Roy consider retiring? He isn't going to go from believing he should be a starter to believing his career is over.

this is just canzano fire stoking, no way they ask, no way he does...now a medical could happen if roy grinds his knee off maybe, but look how that worked for us last time

I keep hearing people say Roy giving up salary. I think they are trying to convince medical retirement. Roy will get every penny of his contract. In fact, it may work out better for him financially to retire now before the new CBA is in place because he could retire now and get 100%, but if CBA changes include non, or partially guaranteed contracts, Roy could be cut with the amnesty and lose a gigantic sum of money. This all depends on the wording in the new CBA.

The Blazers would not save money by having him retire, they would simply be in a position where they could cut Dre, Camby may retire/trade him, and be in a position to be under the cap and have room to play.
