Chipper gets day to rest ailing right knee

Chipper Jones realized relief for nearly two full weeks after receiving two cortisone injections. But after delivering the game-winning single in Saturday night's 12-inning win over the Reds, Jones once again started feeling discomfort in his right knee.

Even before he started feeling discomfort again, Jones had planned to be out of the lineup for Monday's series opener against the Padres. After playing the entirety of Sunday night's win over the Reds, it was obvious that the 39-year-old third baseman needed this day to rest his legs.

An MRI examination performed on May 15 showed Jones has a torn meniscus in his right knee. He immediately received the cortisone shots and spent most of the past two weeks playing in a relatively pain-free manner. But he has always known there might come a point this year when he will need to decide whether he needs to undergo an arthroscopic surgical procedure that would likely sideline him for two weeks.
