Lester looks to keep rolling against other Sox

The Red Sox took over first place on a seven-game road trip that wrapped on Sunday night. Now, heading into a six-game homestand that starts with three against the White Sox, Boston is within striking distance of the American League's best record.

The Red Sox (30-23) had won six in a row heading into the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Tigers in Detroit before falling, 3-0, and now trail the Indians (31-19) by four games in the loss column for the AL's best mark.

"I think we've been really consistent," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "I think, actually, you guys have been talking about the offense and I've been trying to talk about the pitching, because if your pitching is the one thing that's a constant, you're always going to have a chance. The thing that's really helped us is we lose the two guys in our rotation [John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka] and we add the two [Tim Wakefield and Alfredo Aceves] and they give us four games where, I know they weren't terribly stretched out, but they gave us four really good starts. That was huge. We didn't screw our bullpen up and we won games."

Already the American League's winningest pitcher, Jon Lester looks for his eighth win Monday opposite Chicago's Jake Peavy. The White Sox, losers of three of four to Toronto in their last series, are trying to make a six-man rotation work, but aren't sure who's going to start beyond Monday.

Gavin Floyd, scheduled for Tuesday's start, was used Saturday afternoon in relief in a 14-inning affair, and it's not immediately known if he'll be available.

"Peavy tomorrow and then we'll figure out the rest at the Boston series," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "The way things turned around yesterday, it was kind of tough because we had to use Gavin, and we want Gavin to see how he feels to go the day he's supposed to go, or go another day. We have to wait for that.

"I've got to give the privilege to Gavin to make that call because of how we used him."
