Re: MLS to play in Montreal in 2012

The Montreal Impact’s reserve team played its first game of the 2011 season on May 6. However, the players have been training all winter with one objective in mind: continue their development in order to become a professional one day.

Working with each of them daily, U21 Academy head coach Philippe Eullaffroy noticed, in just one year, that many young players have realized that their dream could become reality.

After existing for a few years as

the team was repatriated to Montreal for the start of the 2010 season. This decision turned out to be a judicious one as the proximity to the big club helped the players realize how close they were to their dream. “The young players become more conscious of the fact that they would be given an opportunity to play with the big club,” said Philippe Eullaffroy. “This idea was reinforced because some of them practiced with the Impact at the start of the season, and some were even added to the game sheet for the team’s first game.” Proof in the pudding: while in Tampa Bay for the team’s season-opener on April 9, Mircea Ilcu made an appearance in the game, while Kevin Luarca, Amine Meftouh and Karl Ouimette were on the bench. Reserve team players regularly practice with the first team with head coach Marc Dos Santos at the helm.

    IMFC Reserve Team (U-21)
Three players are from the 2010 Montreal Impact lineup––forward Reda Agourram, midfielder Pierre-Rudolph Mayard and goalkeeper Andrei Badescu––played for the Academy before joining the first team.
In 2010, goalkeeper Dominique Provost, defender Bonheur Aubey and midfielders Kevin Cossette and Bastien Bourgault were called up for matches with the first team, while several other U-21’s took part in training sessions with the first team.

This is the last rung of the Academy ladder, the final step before signing with the Pros. The U21’s play in the Canadian Soccer League (http://canadiansoccerleague.ca), which is Canada’s only professional league sanctioned by the Canada Soccer Association. In 2010, the league featured 13 clubs, in most part based in the Greater Toronto Area. The top eight teams in the standings advance to the playoffs. The U-21 team plays its home games at Saputo Stadium.

ALI GERBA SELECTED BY NATIONAL TEAM
    [IMG]

MONTREAL – Montreal Impact striker Ali Gerba has been selected by the Canadian National Team to play in the 11th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, from June 5 to June 25, in the United States.

“This is a huge honour for me,” said Gerba. “I can’t wait to represent my country in this important championship. I hope to play well and help the national team win.”

Gerba will participate in his third Gold Cup after suiting up for Canada in 2007 and 2009. He is the country's all-time leading scorer in this tournament with six goals. Along Dwayne De Rosario, he is also the country's active leading goal scorer in international matches, with 15 goals, currently in fourth place on the all-time list

    IMFC U21 ACADEMY 1

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact U21 Academy (2-2-1) and Toronto Croatia (0-1-1) tied 1-1, Saturday afternoon, at Marie-Victorin Sports Complex, in the home opener of the Impact reserve team.

“The result reflects the match,” said U21 Academy head coach Philipppe Eullaffroy. “We played against a strong team, the best we have met so far this season. We played well collectively but we lacked fluidity in our passing game. The players responded well to the physical challenge and I think it’s the greatest satisfaction today.”

GOLD CUP: ALI GERBA AIMING FOR THE FINAL
    [IMG]
    A VERY TECHNICAL TEAM

While in the US with the national team, Gerba will be out of the Impact’s line-up. In his goal of helping the team, he plans to use this experience to return as a better player. “You want to do everything you can for your team, but you sometimes need to look long-term. When I come back, I’ll bring with me something positive, which will help the club and me.”

In the meantime, all his focus is on the Canadian team, a team he feels is being underestimated. “We have a very talented group. Just because we are Canadians, many of our players don’t get the respect they deserve for their skill. We have a lot of elements on this team with good vision, impressive playing skills that should leave us confident against these other teams. We have a very technical team with players who have not trouble holding on to the ball. For once that we have these traits on this team, where our previous playing style involved the long ball, we have to appreciate its true value.”
Canada is set to face off against the USA, while Panama meets Guadalupe in the first round of the group stage. The US is the groups' favourite while prognosticators see the Antilles nation finishing fourth. Looking at the FIFA rankings, that should make up for an interesting fight between Panama (67th) and Canada (76th). “These are teams that we face pretty often, especially the US. These are adversaries that we could face along the way to the World Cup. This will be a good way of measuring our level and to see what we need to work on as well.”

THE IMPACT AND THE GOLD CUP
    [IMG]

The Impact has been regularly represented at the national level and in the Gold Cup. In 2005, half the team of the national side was made up of Impact players selected by Frank Yallop, including Greg Sutton, Adam Braz, Gabriel Gervais, Sandro Grande, Patrick Leduc and Ali Gerba. During the tournament, the team put a call in to Antonio Ribeiro as well, while Nevio Pizzolitto was part of the pre-selection process, but did not make the final 18. Félix Brillant, who played with the Impact later on, was also part of the pre-selection camp. Quebec-born players Patrice Bernier and Olivier Occéan were also part of the squad. This year, striker Ali Gerba is representing the Impact at the tournament, while two former members of the club are also participating in Andrew Olivieri (goalkeepers coach) and Mike Moretto (team manager).

The Montreal Impact shut out FC Edmonton by a 2-0 score, Saturday, at Saputo Stadium. Mignane Diouf (34th) and Philippe Billy (83rd) scored, while goalkeeper Bill Gaudette registered his fourth shutout of the season. “We can say mission accomplished today," said Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. "We showed a lot of character and had a very good possession of the ball. We played better than in the 5-0 win in Edmonton. We could have scored more than two goals, but the important for us right now are the three points. We’ve already started our preparation for our matchup against Atlanta.”

    DEFENDER KEVIN HATCHI IS RELEASED
    [IMG]

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced Wednesday that French central defender Kevin Hatchi has been released.

“We looked thoroughly at the situation before taking this decision,” said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. “Kevin Hatchi had certain qualities, but he didn’t fit in the group. We took this decision for the well-being of the team. All our players need to walk in the same direction, especially when the team is going through difficult times.”

Hatchi had joined the Impact on February 10, after taking part to the invitational tryout camp. The rookie player started eight games this season and scored one goal.

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced Tuesday that Marc Dos Santos has resigned as head coach. Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo gave the coaching duties to sporting director Nick De Santis on an interim basis, starting today.

“I’ve accepted Marc’s resignation, because the team is having a difficult and unacceptable sequence," said club president Joey Saputo. “This is too important of a year to let it go like this. From the start of the season, I said it was important to finish our journey in second division on a positive note in order to start MLS on a high. Our goal today hasn't changed, we want to make the playoffs and get as far as possible.”
