Allow me to give an example of an alternative to government health insurance. One of my son's teachers had her cancer reoccur. Medicare refused to pay for the treatment her team of oncologists recommended, which was roughly $27,000. We held a dinner in her honor (she had taught at the school for over 40 years) and raised over $43,000.

There are alternatives to the government.

ahh ok so you would accept welfare and have everyone else pay for you and your family, but only after you begged from charities first.

Hey, this game is fun! You're wonderful at being obtuse!

Firstly, I guarantee that I've paid more in taxes than I would ever pull out of the system. Second, charities are voluntary, taxes aren't. Thirdly, I have a set of conditions that I listed that are above and beyond what would be required to qualify for government assistance. You let me know if you'd sell your house, your car(s) or liquidate your 401k before you would accept Medicaid. I would.

Yes, it does. That has always been the case since the beginning of time, and it's no less true now.

Rheuma didn't beg. She didn't even ask. She's impacted the lives of children and their families. We were happy to help.

you put an extra, self imposed set of rules on yourself, and only after all of those imaginary restrictions are met, would you allow other people to pay for your family. kudos. you would be one of the proudest welfare recipients in history, but a welfare recipient nonetheless.

Do you think there's something wrong with welfare? I don't, for those that are truly in need. I think society should provide a social safety net. I just think the net should be lower than it is now. As for being proud, that's the last thing I am. I simply want to be able to look myself in the mirror. Everyone has different lines; the ones I listed are mine.

As an aside, your hypothetical would never happen. I've spent my life since graduating college being a mercantilist. Even as a grad student, I always had a contract with an investment bank.

i think there are a few things that could be improved on, but if you think its so perfect, good for you.

and lol at "truly in need", from the guy that would sell his daughters bed before he took food stamps

You're playing the Lloyd Christmas role a bit too well. It's almost believable.

    I have a daughter?

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley: funding crisis threatens the NHS

The National Health Service is facing a £20 billion-a-year funding black hole that will threaten its founding principles unless the Coalition’s controversial reforms are brought in to prevent it, the Health Secretary has warned.

In an article for The Daily Telegraph, Andrew Lansley says the core values of the NHS are under threat as never before from a “financial crisis” that will see annual health spending double to £230 billion a year without urgent reform.

While insisting he would never privatise the NHS, Mr Lansley warns that its future as a universal service, available to all and free at the point of use will be at risk “within years” if radical change is blocked.

    It absolutely is health insurance.

One of the big arguments coming out here is "what is a child gets life threatening cancer"? Catastrophic insurance covers the types of things that proponents of universal healthcare use as extreme examples of why we should be covering everybody. You don't here arguments for "what about when a child has the sniffles and needs to go get a prescription".

You wanted to go down the track of using little children getting life threatening cancer as your argument for universal healthcare. Catastrophic insurance covers that. Not everybody can afford the same house to live in, the same food... it isn't unreasonable to think that not everybody will have the same insurance coverage.

If that is your argument, then you should be all in favor of my suggestion for catastrophic insurance. Try to keep up, and try to keep your arguments consistent.

Clearly you can. That is all you've done in this entire thread.

No BB, you're the one who is comparing "Obama care" to Catastrophic insurance for price comparisons. That's not accurate comparisons.

The title of this thread is "Fuck this healthcare reform".

One of the biggest arguments against Obamacare is the cost.

One of the biggest arguments in favor of Obamacare is that people shouldn't be left to die when something catastrophic happens in their life and they can't afford it.

So comparing catastrophic insurance costs, which would eliminate one of the biggest arguments in favor of Obamacare, while also being about 1/3 as expensive is absolutely a valid comparison.

The point is that Obamacare sucks because we can't afford it, and there are other possible alternatives that may work for both sides, but instead they are forcing terrible legislation on the public.

Again, it is absolutely a valid comparison.
