(CNSNews.com) – “Jesus: A prophet of Islam” states the provocative tagline in a “public awareness” advertising campaign launched by a Muslim group in Australia’s largest city.

The group, calling itself Mypeace, says its aim is to inform, not offend – but offend it has, with one Catholic bishop calling the assertion about Jesus “a direct assault on Christian beliefs.”

Roadside billboards in the metropolitan Sydney area carry one of four simple slogans: “Jesus: A Prophet of Islam,” “Holy Qur’an: The Final Testament,” “Muhammad: Mercy to Mankind” and “Islam: Got Questions? Get Answers.”

Each banner invites people to get in touch by phone or online, for literature and a free copy of the Qur’an. Mypeace says the ads will stay up for four weeks, and later this year will be run on scores of public buses in the city.

One of the billboards featuring the Jesus slogan was vandalized a day after it was erected.

Mypeace says its aim is to “address the many misconceptions on Islam, to educate fellow Australians on Islam, invite them to ask any questions that they may have.”
Islamic awareness campaigns are not new, but the slogan referring to Jesus is causing a stir. Muslims and interfaith advocates sometimes invoke Jesus to assert some sort of commonality with Christians, implying that Muslims, too, “believe in Jesus.”

Since Jesus was born of virgin birth did he still get a bunch of virgins in heaven when he died?

This isn't news. From my understanding, Islam recognizes Jesus as a prophet and holds him in high regard, but they do not look at him as the son of god, at least not in the same way as Christianity. If they want to be offended by this, that's fine, but they should have been offended a long time ago... like... when they first became Christians. Or maybe they're just too ignorant to learn about another religion.

How anyone can believe in "virgin birth" is beyond me. It's so obvious how the story came about.

"No daddy, I'm still a virgin. It must be some sort of a fucking miracle!"

Two thousand years from now, in a church somewhere:

"And unto America came a Moor known as Obama"

"Yea, verily, those were dark days for the Chosen"

"And Obama brought a false birth certificate, for he was a terrorist"

"Yea, verily, the birth certificate was badly photoshopped"

"And Obama did rule the land for eight long years with an iron fist-bump"

"And the people did suffer, oh how they suffered"

"And then the Great Palin arose from the North to avenge the people"

"And her progeny, Trig, Track, Piper, Piston, Barbeque, Bristol, and the other one, ruled the nation wisely"

To know yourself you must first know your enemy. Or wait, is it the other way around? To know your enemy you must first know yourself?

    Barfo, that was funny.

Hey, I must have missed the memo, and I am not pridefull to the point of not asking, so.. what does FTFY mean?

Yeah, this is non-news. That isn't a provocative statement.

    I think it's pretty shitty.

Would they accept a drawing of Mohammad on a bus advertisement with the statement, "Mohammad is not a prophet."?

Jesus is not JUST a "prophet" to Christians. He is the son of God, blah blah blah. Rubbing different beliefs in the face of believers is crass and, in the case of a hyper-sensitive faith like Islam, hypocritical.

I don't have anything that I would be up in arms (literally or figuratively) about seeing on a bus, but I don't think that the group that did the Jesus ad in this thread could say the same thing.

Now that is a great idea to boost traffic to the Blazer forum. Lets start a thread where we post pictures of Mohammed! Sure it would attract a lot of pissed off Muslims but I'm positive we could turn them into Blazer fans.

Better yet, post the pictures in the Lakers forum. Much easier to convert the angry Muslims into Blazer fans at that point.

What is the news? The three chief prophets of Islam are Moses, Jesus and Muhammed. That's been part of the religion for its entire existence. If someone is too ignorant to know that, and gets uptight at learning it, that is their problem. I have no objection to any Muslim calling Moses a prophet of Islam, he was.

That is if you think any of those individuals actually existed...
