Floyd Mayweather announced he would end his year-plus layoff by fighting Victor Ortiz in a Sept. 17 bout.

Mayweather made the announcement today via Twitter, although rumors of the bout, which will be for Ortiz's World Boxing Council middleweight championship, ran rampant for weeks, and a spokesman close to the Grand Rapids native told The Press more than a month ago that negotiations were in the works.

Site has not been announced but Ortiz several weeks ago told his hometown newspaper in Lawrence, Kan., that he had a contract in hand to fight Mayweather in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, the unbeaten Grand Rapids native, has held championships in five weight divisions, but the move up to the 160-pound class is a marked jump.
