JohnCanzanoBFT via Twitter Buchanan is very active point man but not the decision maker, according to those who talk trades w him
My guess is that Kolde, Allen, and Larry Miller are coming up with ideas, and then having Buchanon call about the deals. The other GMs come back with a counter, and instead of being able to negotiate, Buchanon does the "I'll get back to you" routine and runs upstairs to relay the message to the Vulcans. Probably gets a bit old for the other GMs.
What makes any of you think that it was any different for Cho, KP, Nash, Patterson, Whitsitt...? Do you think that they had the authority to act without clearing major moves with Paul Allen? For that matter, how many GMs in the league can make a major deal without clearing it with ownership? Just Canzano being Canzano.
yeah, I'm pretty sure Cho isn't making deals right now, and then calling MJ on the course and saying "I just traded 3 draft picks and Steven Jackson for Darko!" Actually...nevermind.
I think those guys were all allowed to negotiate completed deals, pending ownership approval, on their own. The recent Oregonian piece on Paul Allen basically says as much, as some of the former GM's interviewed said that selling your own trade to Paul Allen was very difficult. I don't think Buchanon has that sort of independence. I may be wrong, but if he does have that independence to do most or all of the negotiating, then the Blazers should just make him the GM.
He is acting GM. He's not assistant GM. I don't know why they'd make him acting GM if they don't let him act as a GM. Ed O.
It's actually a very simple and efficient process: Buchanon calls Miller, who calls "hat guy", who calls Allen, who calls Kolde, who calls HCP in "the truck", who calls Buchanon back and says "maybe."
yeah but I think the point of this discussion is the "decision maker" part and I think e_blazer pretty much nailed it with his post.
I think that's a separate issue. We all know that any trade must be run by PA. Canzano knows that as well. It's how that trade is constructed, and what role the Blazer GM plays in it, that Canzano is referencing, IMO. No biggie, though. It's just my take on it.
