    i would love for him to just sign with us, and fuck matching some other teams offer

    i have a feeling PA is going to be proactive about it, not wait for him to "test the market"

    I think it would be a smart play, to publicly offer something like $26M over 4--something that's probably below market value, but shows that you want to keep him around. It might prevent teams from submitting a larger offer, knowing that we're just going to match it anyway.

    Do you want to prevent other teams from submitting offers? I'd rather the team discover his market value while he's still restricted, rather than next off-season when he's unrestricted. The team will have more options (i.e. matching) this off-season.

    I'm curious to see what other teams are interested in Greg and what they think his market value is.
    Part of me hopes that several teams toss him an offer to help show the local fans that want us to get rid of him that its a stupid idea.

    That's right. After the 1st, assuming there's no lockout, other teams can offer him whatever they have available. Think what we did with Paul Millsap and Wes Matthews. One Utah matched, the other they didn't.

    To summarize, a restricted free agent essentially has four options:
    • He can accept his prior team's qualifying offer, play for one season, and become a free agent again the following summer.
    • He can accept his prior team's maximum qualifying offer (if applicable, and if one has been submitted) and play under a long-term contract at the maximum salary.
    • He can sign an offer sheet with another team, which his prior team is given the opportunity to match.
    • He can negotiate a new contract with his prior team that is independent of the qualifying offer or maximum qualifying offer.

    Only for the next 2 days, I believe. Once the free agency period starts (whenever that is, considering the lockout likelihood), my understanding is that the team can then offer him anything between the minimum and a max contract.

    I assume that the lockout will start July 1. Do you think there will be any period where teams can actually negotiate and sign FA's? I just don't see how it is possible if the CBA isn't signed. Hopefully the lockout ends sooner rather than later, but you have to be concerned that Oden goes forward with accepting the Q.O. at some time and just playing the year out (albeit rehabbing as long as he can). I'm hoping they just sign him to a fair mid range deal and get it over with.

    That's not at odds with negotiating a deal with Portland after the June 31 QO deadline. Whenever free agency happens, Oden can gauge league interest as a restricted free agent and then (if he wants) negotiate a new deal with Portland, armed with that information.
