Non-Blazer boards are aghast in amazement that we didn't jump at the chance to rid ourselves of this albatross. They say our owner is an idiot. They don't know that it's the fans who demand this. Comments on the $8.8 million:

Why? He's not even worth $8.80.

He should leap at this offer. No, he might get injured.

Won't be back till January? Maybe not then. Jesus, they do heart surgery and you're home in 1-4 days.

    "Oden" spelled backward is "injury."

We also don't even know if Dirk, LaBron, LA, Grant Hill, or Patty Mills will ever play again... tomorrow isn't promised to anyone.

Players get new contracts based on what it's speculated they're capable of. Portland extending a 9M one year contract indicates those in the know think he's capable of impacting the game in a big way.

Doesn't matter....next season is going to be an abreviated fustercluck anyway. A one year deal is pretty low risk.

What does matter: when he again fails to give the team anything, and the new hard cap is strangling everyone, will the Blazers gut the team to give him a contract he hasn't earned?

I think all NBA executives should base their decisions on opinions from the fans on opposing teams message board.

Agreed. It would be IMPOSSIBLE for a fan of another team to pick any moronic opinions from our Blazers community... so it must be the case with all communities, right?

He still owes us 160+ games we paid him for.

I think we should get those games before having to pay any more.

Who negotiated this stupid contract? Get that Guv from WI in here and let's straighten this clown out.

So, Greg will become an UFA next summer?

I don't see how this will go well for the Blazers. With all this pressure of being the #1 pick you know he's going to bolt.

If he is healthy next year, the fans will be happy, and he will be happy, and he will stay.

If he is not healthy next year, then the fans will not be happy, and he will not be happy, and he will bolt. And we won't care if he does.

Dirk Nowitzki, LeBron James, and LaMarcus Aldridge have never missed a season in their careers, and you're comparing them to Greg Oden??

In the case of Dirk Nowitzi, there's no speculation. In the case of Greg Oden, there's ONLY speculation.

Gee, if I took a whole year off from my job to "rehab" after a knee injury, my company wouldn't consider it "work"--and I certainly wouldn't get paid for it.

Since Portland has tendered a QO to Greg , they are now free to negotiate a long term deal with him.

Well, I imagine your knee isn't super important for your job. Oden's job this past year was to rehab his knee so that he can "work" sometime this coming season. And by all accounts he's been working really hard to do that job. Sorry if you don't think it's fair.

again, health is a tenuous balance for everyone... or... tomorrow isn't promised to anyone. Should Portland's management have cut ties with Walton before the championship season because of his various health issues? Same deal with Sabas. Similarly should the Mavs have said adios to Jason Kidd for having undergone a micro-fracture on his knee? Was Cuban crazy for giving Tyson Chandler a big contract after the ongoing issues he's had with his back?

Hoops is a rough game and injuries do happen to pretty much every player. While frustration from fans over time missed is understandable, those in the know are speculating that Greg stands a very good chance of being healthy and dominant again in the near future. Those opinions are based on thorough medical evaluations not frustrated blind guesses. They are aware of all sorts of details about how his rehab is going that we just aren't.

The silver lining with Oden's injuries is that they're not expected to hinder his athleticism once he makes it back. Broken bones heal stronger then they were before and MF surgery has proven to be a solid long term fix. Management has made their decision... here's to them being proven right

Good move, and one the Blazers had to make. What other fans on other message boards say doesn't and shouldn't matter. The Blazers just made another committment to Greg, and I hope there is some sort of abbreviated FA period (perhaps a CBA extension for a few weeks that is agreed to tonight?) so the Blazers can see what the market value is for Greg.

Speculating. Now there's a good use of the word.

Anyway, I hope they are right and I hope that Oden can finally start realizing his amazing potential. Nothing would make me happier.

Oden's knees are now bionic. He is the $8.8 million dollar man. Cue Lee Majors sound effect now.
