First of all the Constitution is meant to enumerate the powers of govt., not to limit our rights. Second, the law was passed in 2002, when she wasn't a member of congress. And third, if you feel the govt. is overly intrusive as she does, she can object and refuse and pay the fine or whatever. In fact, if she did refuse and paid the fine, she'd be standing on principle, which is something I don't expect from traditional politicians.

Yeah, so maybe my example wasn't well chosen. How about this: the constitution doesn't say that the government has the power to send a rocket to the moon, therefore NASA is unconstitutional. Heck, I'll bet you agree with that, don't you?

Oh, now there's a good excuse. The law was passed before she became a member of congress, so she doesn't have to obey it and/or know about it. Sure, that works.

I haven't heard anything about her paying a fine. I agree that would be the principled thing to do, although of course principled isn't really the right word for objecting to the census.

NASA? It's not in the constitution, unless you can make an argument it's a military thing (and it is, actually). The military has to be able to act on land, sea, air, and now space, no?

You made it sound like she voted for the law. Congress has passed a lot of BS laws since its inception.

She doesn't object to the census, just answering questions that go beyond counting the number of people for districting purposes.

No, I didn't make it sound like that.

So what? Unless they are overturned in court or by subsequent laws, they are law. Are you saying you believe that everyone should be free to disobey any laws they choose to? Or just congresspeople? Or just Bachmann?

Yeah, so what? I don't object to all laws, but I object to the law that says you can't rob banks. So it's ok if I rob banks, right?

So you'd favor any old law congress passed, like re-establishing slavery? That's not constitutional. And you indicate it would be law until overturned, which could take years.

Favor? The law is not an opinion poll.

So you don't oppose any laws? That would be favoring some (over others).

There is a difference between opposing a law and breaking a law, isn't there? We are talking about Bachmann breaking the law.

So? There are multiple people I didn't kill today. Does that mean I'm not a murderer?

I just found this thread. I don't know whether to run down the street screaming or to put things in perspective.

I like that she rebels against a law, but she chose a softball. Instead of trying to look like a tough guy on the census, why doesn't she rebel against a law that causes tens of millions of people to go to prison for nothing, like drug laws? Let's see her be as tough on herself as she is on poor people. Rebel against something that runs her a risk of suffering if she wants to be a hero.

As for John Wayne Gacy, here's the point: Now that she's going national, she will be held to higher standards. She's a talker. She has to stop yapping like Rush Limbaugh and put some accuracy into her yammering. Radio pundit talent is not what is needed to be President.

As for the thread's third theme--I'm headed out to the street right now to bash my head into a tree.

    hello again...

after consulting the ever accurate Wiki... at least with my life experience reference, it seems that besides herself, Gacy is the only other person with any real national notoriety to come from Waterloo. Former NFL kicker Reggie Roby is probably next up. It's only a town of 68,000 or about the same size as Hillsboro. Is it really unreasonable to expect that she'd have heard of the other big celebrity from her small home town?

anyhoo, hell of a way to kick off a Presidential bid. Having heard her speak a few times I'm guessing she'll continue to provide laughs as long as her campaign remains afloat.

I am hoping for a Palin Bachman ticket. And not just because of the unintentional comedy that would come with it (or the "you can't say anything bad about them because they're women" cry).

The lunacy that would fill our airwaves and Victoria Jackson comeback would be epic.

If those two run together (or run period) it'd be too funny to even comprehend.

It'd be like if Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton decided to run. You'd look forward to their press conferences or speeches not because they'd be historic, but because you know something funny would be said/mangled.

ASPEN, Colo. — Bill Clinton thinks Mitt Romney is much improved from his last presidential run, admits he kind of likes Jon Huntsman and says Michele Bachmann is looking like “a better candidate than he thought.

“Bachmann’s been a better candidate than I thought she’d be, and I don’t agree with her on nearly anything. But she’s got a very compelling personal story, and she gotta lot of juice, and she turns [on] a lot of those anti-government crowd.”
