I got the HTC Thunderbolt a few days after it was released. Ordered from Verizon online and was able to get it on a 1 year contract for only $30 above the 2yr price. They have since gone to 2yr contracts only on all phones so I feel fairly lucky. This is my first android phone, and basically my first smartphone. Battery life sucks bad but I have a charger at work/home/car so it's not an issue for me. Well except for one night that I ended up drunk walking along I5 for 20 mins with a dead phone to get to the girlfriends so that kind of sucked but hey at least I got a funny story now. I'm a big fan of Android, free google maps navigation is awesome, the phone is much cheaper than an Iphone and I like the idea that I can do things such as rooting it and loading custom ROM's down the road. The big screen on the Thunderbolt (4.3") is awesome. I'll never go back to a smaller screen again. It might be to bulky for a hot chick wearing tight jeans, but for me the size isn't an issue, my wallet is larger. Typing on a touchscreen is fine, I'm so glad I didn't go with a physical keyboard or a smaller screen. I've been using the laptop a lot less around the house since often I find myself on the phone instead.
The Thunderbolt will do voice/data at the same time, even over 3G. I'm not sure about other Verizon 4G phones, but if that's an important feature to anyone phone shopping you can get it. I believe the Thunderbolt was the first Verizon phone to do this. I personally don't think it's mattered much to me, maybe I used it while having a speakerphone conversation and navigation going but I haven't really noticed.
yeah, I didn't want to get too complicated with the explanation, but Verizon 3G has been upgraded to the next "version", and that version of 3G with certain supported handsets will do voice/data at the same time.
My daughter has an Evo that I have used and love it as well. I am deciding to get either the 3d or wait a couple of weeks for the Photon from Motorola
my only complaint about android devices is the battery life. I had to buy an extended battery, since then it's perfection.
I have an HTC Hero, but I don't really find myself using much of its features...or any of its features other than the phone.
I have an HTC EVO. Pretty cool, but more features than I'll ever need. Thought this was pretty funny:
I have the Droid Incredible. Get Advanced task killer and Juice defender. They'll double your battery life. I'm 10 hours into being unplugged @ 91%....currently at 61%.
I've got a Droid 1 and its a bit slow at times. I think the OS updates have moved a bit beyond this hardware. Everything works just fine its just not that snappy like some of the newer ones are. I have no problems with my battery life though. It was sort of crappy back when I first got it and it was set to check my email accounts and whatnot every hour. I've since scaled back a lot of those settings and I could easily go two days without charging it and if I knew I wouldn't have a charger I could probably stretch it to three or four. Not a big time phone user but several calls a day, double digit texts and your occasional google maps/email check/games/etc. I'm due for a new phone in the fall but I'll be abroad and I'd probably wait until Jan/Feb anyway to get a legit 4G phone not some feaux 3G/4G first gen type of deal.
The Verizon iPhone does data and voice at the same time if you are on WiFi. I talked to a few people who have the AT&T version, and they said they never need voice and data at the same time. I haven't missed it. FWIW, I tend to use the phone far more for data calls than for voice ones anyway.
Got an HTC thunderbolt and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Both Incredible. Android is amazing. AOSP is God-like. So easy to hack and if you know how to do it everything on this phone is free.
