PORTLAND -- Former Oregon Ducks and Detroit Lions quarterback Joey Harrington was rushed to the hospital Sunday night after he was hit by a vehicle while riding a bicycle in Southeast Portland. According to Portland Police, Harrington suffered non-life threatening injuries when an SUV driven by 26-year-old Derek Johnston hit him from behind at the intersection of SE Foster & 88th Avenue. Police said that Johnston stayed at the scene of the crash and cooperated with investigators. Investigators determined that Johnston was driving westbound on Foster when his Toyota RAV4 struck the back wheel of Harrington's bicycle. Johnston was cited for following too close. Harrington who was a Heisman Trophy Finalist lead the Oregon Ducks to three bowl wins before heading to the NFL where he played for four teams in eight seasons.
Also no truth to the rumor that Joey turned over while trying to pass. Seriously, I'm glad it's non-life-threatening. Another sub officer was killed riding to work a couple years ago...mid-30's, triathlete, ..., but a car clipped him and he hit the curb just wrong enough to miss the helmet and crack his skull.
This is why I'm so nervous about commuting on a bike. I wish there were more paths that were separate from roads and cars. I think ultimately there needs to be bike highways where we don't have to worry about getting hit.
Nobody is talking about why in the fuck he was out in that neighborhood!!! That is some shady shit over there. Joey and his wife live at the bottom of the hill from us and there is more then enough places to bike around here!
On...the....east....side. Where the fuck are us west side boys supposed to ride? Barbur Blvd aint exactly candy land or shoots and ladders. It's more like Sorry and Scrabble.
