The demise of Strikeforce is starting to crest the horizon.

Golden Glory announced today that their fighters- former SF women's 135-lbs champion Marloes Coenen, Valentijn Overeem, and UFC heavyweight Jon Olav-Einemo- have been released following failed negotiations between GG and Zuffa.

Additionally, Dan Henderson, current Strikeforce LHW champion, and Fedor Emelianenko, have clauses in their contracts which allow them to become free agents. Henderson has reportedly exercised this option and is seeking a return to the UFC, while Emelianenko's future is undecided but unlikely to continue with Strikeforce where he is 0-3 in his last three bouts (his reputation irrevocably damaged).

In recent months Strikeforce WW champion Nick Diaz has moved to the UFC, women's 145-lbs champion Cris Santos has been looking for work elsewhere, especially with the WWE, and heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (also with Golden Glory) has been released from his contract.

In related news their last Challengers show drew $44,000 at the gate paid attendance, roughly 10% of what the UFC was able to draw at their last show at the same venue (Palms/Vegas).

Zuffa's reason for releasing the Golden Glory fighters is that their manager, Martijn De Jong, wanted their paycheques sent to him, for him to pay out the trainers, coaches, etc. first, before passing along the fight salaries to the fighters. Zuffa pays the fighters directly and wouldn't accommodate this scheme.

Seriously, what are SFs main events going to be now? Meisha Tate and Gina Carano would probably be their biggest draws. King Mo? Gilbert Melendez? Jacare? Daley coming off of two straight losses? Hard to envision them lasting very long with no Fedor, Diaz, Hendo, Overeem.

Even with all of the talent they have the UFC still puts on shows with Bisping/Munoz as the main event, so...

Re: Strikeforce is disintegrating: Coenen, Henderson, and Emelianenko set to walk

Best fight they can do at every weight class:

    Silva vs. Barnett
    Mousasi vs. Cavalcante
    Souza vs. Le
    Woodley vs. Saffiedine
    Melendez vs. Masvidal
    Carano vs. Nunes
    Kaufman vs. Tate 2

    Yeah, they're pretty much fucked.

We still might get to see Emelianenko vs. Overeem now that they are both FA's.

Hendo is a free agent but DFW is skeptical that they can get a deal done considering he has more momentum now than he did when he beat Bisping, and they couldn't come close to a deal last time.

You're right but thats about the worst the UFC can possibly do. Both of those guys would dominate the MW division in SF. They don't have many (any?) matchups that would even be that good.

Marloes Coenen tweeted a picture of her paycheque, addressed to her, for her $37,000 involvement in the last show, in an attempt to defend Boon and De Jong.

You really think he's a threat to Velasquez, Silva or Jones?

    'Cause he wants champion money.

Velasquez would probably rag doll him.

He'd be a heavy underdog to Jones, but he's got the right hand and the Greco-Roman background to hang with Jones if he can close the distance. He's got absurd strength, so I don't think Jones would be able to rag doll him, either.

As for a Silva rematch, I think Dan could hang with Silva again if he sticks to his gameplan to grind out a wrestling decision instead of trying to trade punches.

Either way, if Tito is worth champion money, Dan does, too. You can't count Dan out against anybody. He's a big name in the MMA community who puts on damn good fights. You can't let a talent like that go with all the great matchups you can make.

I think Hendo is done with 185. He seems very much at peace with fighting bigger guys and after the Shields fight he seemed disinterested in struggling to cut weight.

Dude just handled Babalu, Cavalcante, and Fedor with ease. Not exactly the murderer's row of the UFC 205 lb division but I'd love to see Hendo against most of the top 205ers and I'd give him a chance against Jon Jones.

Not surprisingly, Boon and MDJ have had a bit of a change of heart (it seems) and are open to renegotiating with the UFC to get their fighters back into the fold.

Even less surprisingly, the UFC is interested in Overeem.

^ Interesting. Don't like the fight stylistically for either guy, which probably means it would be good.
