    Smoother, faster and safer.

Those attributes, said Nicky Hayden, should apply to the Aug. 27-29 running of the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, thanks to the repaved infield.

"It was awesome," the MotoGP Ducati Team rider from Owensboro, Ky, said after conducting a tire test Friday for Pirelli. "It's pool-table smooth. We wanted smooth, and we got smooth."

Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials, acting on suggestions from riders after last year's race, resurfaced 1.5 miles of the course, beginning with Turn 5 and running through Turn 16. Basically, they repaved everything but the 2.5-mile oval.

"We were concerned about two corners," Hayden said, referring to Turns 6 and 11. Turn 6 is a sweeping left-hander off the oval's Turn 2; Turn 11 is a right-handed horseshoe turn the riders negotiate shortly before heading back onto the oval.

"We wanted those corners redone," Hayden continued. "But Indy does what it does -- they paved the whole infield."
