Ok, so I get that the people of NY think they are more important than anyone else on the planet, but they aren't. This is only a category 1 hurricane. That is smaller than Ike, and way smaller than Katrina. The people there need to be careful and safe, but this is not a very big storm, and certainly not historic in any way
If the media was not (mostly) situated in the New York/WDC area, I don't think this would have been the media circus it was/is.
There are a shit ton of people in this Hurricane's path. NY subway getting shut down is unheard of. I think your cynicism is not warranted.
Still, it can do a lot of collateral damage. Dams, dykes, power outages... give weather its due respect.
We got power back last night. There was mostly wind damage here Playground completely obliterated by the wind. Vinyl siding blown off the side of my apartment. My parents didn't fare too well 100 miles north of me. Their basement flooded and they have 3 trees down in their yard. They expect to get power back in the next 2-3 days.
Probably the power company. There were company trucks all over town. How would I know if FEMA did it?
