Or, is this just a case of freshman luck?

At any rate, dude was poised and looked like he "belonged".

wasnt impressed by some of his throws, his deep touch needs work too, but it doesnt hurt having steve smith catching passes

i could see him throwing for 3500 yards and winning 4 games or so though

I am pretty sure some of us in this forum can throw for 400 yards against the Cardinals. Also keep in mind that teams haven't had a lot of chance to scout him. Look how "good" Vince Young did in his first year with the Titans. Let's see how he does, not only next week with the Packers, but later on in the season

    I think he'll be "OK".

That said, I'm sure there are many in here who are somewhat biased against him as he was a primary reason the Tigers beat the beloved Ducks.

    jus sayin' ;)

I'm not biased against him. I think the problem running QB's from college have is that they tend to trust their feet too much in the pros- and that is not going to get it done. But if he can be a patient pocket passer, he has a shot at being a very good QB.

    No. Next question? :)

In all seriousness, it was a good accomplishment, but I think that it was more b/c AZ had the double-whammy of being both inept at coverage and not thinking that Carolina would air it out as much, rather than that Cam is Dan Marino and Steve Young's love child. Steve Smith is going to help out anyone, until he inevitably gets injured.

Exactly. Those MLB'ers are just as fast or faster than those running QB's. It just doesnt work.

Huh? Steve Smith is good, but he isn't someone (at this point in his career) where I say he helps out anyone. (Did Braylon help out Alex Smith? Percy Harvin help out McNabb? Brandon Marshall help out Henne?)

Cam Newton looked like a legit NFL QB yesterday. I expect him to have his ups and downs throughout the season, but I think he did a good job of shutting up a lot of his haters.

I think he will end up being a multiple pro-bowl qb.

    Big arm. Check

    Size of a LB. Check

Ability to throw on the run. Check

Ability to extend plays outside of the pocket. Check

Mental fortitude to be a great NFL QB. Uncertain

If Newton is as mentally strong as a Manning, Brady, Rodgers, or McNabb (in his athletic prime, not now), then I don't see why he won't be the next great NFL QB. He has as many physical tools as any QB to enter the league since Mike Vick, plus he's much bigger than Vick (though not as elusive).

On a side note, I drafted Newton with the last pick of my fantasy draft as somewhat of a joke as a 3rd QB. Looks like he may have some trade value as the season progresses.

I call BS on you haters, Newton looks like a god at this point. He's a rookie Quarterback remember? In College he was more physically gifted and statistically dominant than Vince Young. Steve Smith is a has-been and all great QBs have great receivers.

I would not phrase it as mental fortitude, that sounds too vague.

Intelligence and the ability to read defenses is the term I would use. Newton is the best college football player I've ever seen. People try to attribute Auburn's success to their defense (Nick Fairley was projected as the #1 pick after the championship game), but they were mediocre statistically. Tim Tebow had a top 5 defense, not Newton. Hopefully he stays healthy.

So far, he's looked pretty good in his first two games. Who knows, maybe he is the real deal afterall.

Oh yeah, I was not referring to you . Don't worry lol.

    Your analysis seems very reasonable.

He looks good so far. I still can't get Vince Young out of my head. He looked amazing the year he started for the Titans. Then defenses prepared for him, and he sucked.

Cam "God" Newton had a total quarterback rating that was good enough to rank him 29th out of 32 QB's this past weekend. LOL

I sure loved his interceptions, those were his best plays.
