That's partly because Sarah Palin has had her eye on them....from her porch.

This thread is just yesterday's outrage. What is today's outrage? If you want us Republicans to get out of bed, you gotta come up with a new one every day. Come on, offend me. I need it to live.

So those evil corporations only have to buy one government? Good plan, not.

Australia banned the use of firearms for self-defense purposes. You can only own a gun if you apply to the state, prove you have a responsible way to store it, and show that you need it for something like hunting. Check out their classification system. Not exactly a libertarian ideal.

They also have the whole universal state-provided health care thing too.

But instead of some dumb fence they solved their illegal immigration problem by digging a giant moat around their country.

I just watched Machete again last night. DiNero plays a Texas state senator who proposed an electric fence along the border. Yikes, is it coming to that in reality?

So it's not perfect. Las Vegas is quite libertarian. There are more security guards (private police) than real police. It work just fine. Prostitution is effectively legal, carrying guns is legal, gambling is legal, etc. No state income tax. Business tax was $35 per employee.

At least it was a very libertarian place, until the building boom and too many Californians moved there and tried to turn it into California via ballot measures.

You can become wealthy there in a hurry, or you can go bust. People have to be responsible for their own actions.

There's a much stronger union influence there than the rest of the country as well.

I'm not advocating one way or the other, just trying to understand...

You think that, if given the chance to magically become any type of government, the US should model itself after Vegas?

Why not? It's absolutely the libertarian ideal to have a country where on any given day you can wake up broke, married to someone you don't know, and missing a kidney.

    Sure.

I lived there 5+ years. It's not a whole lot different lifestyle than living in the LA suburbs. There's just a lot less traffic on the freeways.

No, it's obvious what we need is a moat with alligators.

sounds like you're saying it was libertarian until people actually moved there and there was more then 8 people in the state.

Nah. Las Vegas had lots of people before the Californians came and speculated the real estate market into the ground.

One example of their change to the city was a ballot initiative to ban smoking in bars and restaurants. No way the casinos would let their business be killed over that social agenda.

CARSON CITY -- Bar and restaurant representatives told legislators Friday their customer base and profits have declined dramatically and they've been forced to lay off workers because of a smoking ban approved by voters in 2006.

The ban has also cost the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority $41 million in business, Senior Vice President Terry Jicinsky testified.

Jicinsky said his organization lost cigar and smoking industry trade shows to New Orleans because of the law that prohibits smoking in most public places that children can frequent. But he added he has a commitment from the trade shows to return to Las Vegas if legislators pass Senate Bill 372.

I guess the libertarian view is, if you don't like lung cancer, you are free to use some other airport?
