They had designated smoking areas with slot machines. After the law passed, they had to remove those designated smoking areas. Capiche?

If you don't want to be near the smoke, stay away from the smoking areas. Or stay home.

But people do smoke. They used to smoke and play slots. Now they smoke outside by the curb, where there are no slots. People tend to smoke more when they're nervous, and flying does make people nervous.

And the smoking areas were glass walled rooms with dedicated ventilation system. You wouldn't even smell the smoke if you walked right past it. That's first hand experience, I've flown out of that airport dozens of times.

So put some slots out by the curb. Problem solved.

yah, well I don't smoke nor do I want to smell your stank ass smoke (not that you smoke). Nor do I want to breath in your stank ass smoke OR smell like your stank ass smoke.
I've flown in and out of the SLC airport probably 20+ times in the last 10 years, and if you don't think you could always tell where the smoking section was, you either are lying to continue this poor argument or you have absolutely no sense of smell.

How about the California people stay in California instead.

Sin City, it's called. Vices are what the place is about (for visitors).

I don't have any sympathy for you to know where the smoking areas are.

as much as people like to crack on California, and Californians moving to new areas, they (imho) do more good then bad. Plus, I'd rather have people who want to live in the area move there, instead of people who bitch and want to keep it the same it was 60 years ago.

No, not all people (and it's not just Californians) moving into new areas is good, but I think the small town mentality of being afraid of people moving in OR the belief that people should be able to do whatever they want, isn't going to work anymore. That genie is out of the bottle anymore.

If you tell me that smokers can now smoke wherever they want, including sporting events, then I say we should do more. I say fuck over people in wheelchairs. I want to be able to park wherever I want, and not have to worry about them taking the good seats. I don't think that buildings should have wider doors, or elevators, or wheel chair only bathrooms.

It costs companies too much money.

Pretty sure Californians are a big chunk of the visitors. Your solution would cost more than the smoking ban.

that was one of the biggest flaws in McCall's famous slogan. Basically, "fuck you california. we want your money, but don't ever move here". my response would be "you know what? Washington looks like they want my tourist money"

(Steve Wynn is one of the good guys. He was an Obama supporter, even. His company is well known in the area for taking care of its employees. He's invested and attracted $billions into the city at all levels.)

    What never did what?

Sure it did. Because convention planners are skittish like that. One stray comment from the president, and they just cancel the convention.

So your position, Denny, is that people should blow a bunch of cash in Vegas instead of saving for college? And that people used to do exactly that, but stopped when the President told them not to?

I seriously don't get what the issue is. This is trumped up crap like the "cracks about the Devastating Texas fires" bullshit. Why do people seem to make up issues?

Smoking allowed in public places never kept Californians from going to Las Vegas.

It's not one stray comment from the president, it's the president who takes over companies, fires the board of directors, fires the CEO, and threatens executives everywhere not to spend money in Vegas.

Vegas is one of the premier convention hosting locations in the country. It has a number of convention halls and a lot of hotel rooms, plus the entertainment.
