So, Katz is listed as a JR but academically is a SR. Got it....

    http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/26574/unitas-award-releases-25-man-watch-list

    Katz: Q rating 78.9 At:25 Com:13 %52.0 yds104 TD: 0
    Thomas: 161 108 66 61 842 12
    (+ 2 rush TD)

Foles and Luck also made the list. Trying to make sense of this, I researched the award and from the Johnny Unitas award site:

The Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the top senior quarterback by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Foundation encapsulates all that is positive in college sports. The award acknowledges performance on the field for sure. But it goes beyond completion percentage and touchdown strikes. The award values character, citizenship, integrity and those who honor the game.

"The winner of the Golden Arm Award is recognized not only for his athletic accomplishments, but also for his character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, and athletic abilities," says John Unitas, Jr., President of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc. The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award bears the name of the man many refer to as the finest quarterback ever to play the game of football
    .

So, it Thomas out based on character issues or being a JR -- because the award is only for SR's? Aren't there other JR's on the list?

It's just a ball of confusion...that's what the world is today...hey...hey.

Ryan Katz does have a nice bio on osubeaver.com:

2011: Ryan is one of seven returning starting quarterbacks in the Pac-12 ... possibly the strongest arm of any Pac-12 quarterback and arguably the strongest of any OSU quarterback in history ... prior to the 2010 season Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com wrote -- "short of Ryan Mallett, I haven't seen another QB playing in college right now with a stronger arm" ... fully recovered from a broken right wrist he suffered in the final game of last season ... participated in some drills during spring practice, but generally was held out of most while rehabilitating from offseason wrist surgery ... 2,618 career passing yards -262 yards shy of moving into OSU's career top-10 for yards ... if he matches last season's total for the next two years he would end his career fourth on the OSU passing charts ... career completion percentage of .593 (226--381) ... 18 career touchdown passes ranks 10th at OSU.

Katz obviously shouldnt be on the radar for any on field/stat based award.

Some good info in this thread. Apparently DT's "drug issues" are why he isn't on the list. Of course, as a poster points out, being a convicted burglar didn't keep Colt Brennan off of the list in 2007.
