CORVALLIS - There's more good news on the injury front for Oregon State. That's right, good news.

The knee injury that forced safety Josh LaGrone into early retirement has improved to the point where he's going back to work. And the Beavers could - and will - use him.

"I always wanted to be back out here, from the day I stopped playing,'' LaGrone said Wednesday.

LaGrone had retired midway through fall camp because of a knee injury and worries about the long-term health of the knee. But LaGrone began to feel better, sought another doctor's opinion, got another MRI and decided to come back.

"Excitement, oh man,'' said LaGrone about getting the welcome back from coach Mike Riley. "It was the biggest smile on my face.''

LaGrone said he spoke often with his father, who left the decision up to him. Ultimately, LaGrone decided he missed his teammates too much.

"I love to compete, I love to win, but it all comes down to just being out here in the midst of this team is a blessing,'' he said.

Plus, he didn't want to have to look back on his college career and see unfinished business.

"I don’t want to leave the field wondering “what if?’’ he said.

So LaGrone will be in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday, prepared to play a backup role in the Beavers' beleaguered secondary.

His return also means that freshman Peter Ashton will redshirt this season, and the Beavers won't have to rely too much on another true freshman, Tyrequek Zimmerman.

But with an iffy knee and more than a month's worth of rust, how will LaGrone play?

"Mentally, it’s still there,'' LaGrone said. "As far as technique and stuff, that will all come back to me. I’ve been a month out of it. It feels good to be back out there.''

Good news...anytime any player can come back from two serious knee injuries.
I hope he has a dynamic year. Last season he played in every game but the season opener and his stats totaled three tackles - (1) Boise St, (1) USC, (1) Cal.
