Is that akin to, say, the Blazers and L*kers rivalry? I was up in Seattle last weekend visiting my girlfriend. We stopped off at the Ram to catch the first half of the Ducks game prior to going to a movie. We sat at the bar and when I made a cheer for a Ducks TD, the dude next to me goes, "You're in the wrong territory to be rooting for the ducks, pal." This, when they were playing ASU!! I was gonna say something, but the gf grabbed my shirt sleeve, so I restrained myself. Anyway, she's a pretty big Huskies fan. I'll be up there on the 5th for the game. I'm not planning on wearing Ducks garb, though.
When comparing the rivalry to the Blazers/L*kers, I'm not saying it's the biggest right now. Rather, questioning if it's the longest standing one.
Great question. Wikipedia says the two teams met first in 1900 and have played 102 times. Huskies lead the series 57-40-5. But, the Huskies haven't beat the Ducks since 2003 and since 2000 the Ducks are 8-2 vs UW. Personal experience...I spent 4 miserable years living near Seattle. I can't stand them. The only good thing about UW is their amazing campus in the fall when the leaves begin to change color. Other than that, they are dirt. Lower than dirt. Their fans and favorite sportscasters literally cheer at Duck injuries. The fans are rude, Husky Stadium is crappy (it has a track around it! HAHA), and their colors are ugly. Some of my most miserable away game experiences were there. I used to wear my Ducks gear to Seahawk games and catch all kinds of crap too - but, that's what we fans do.....this was before Oregon was really good and popular too, so I was def in the minority. They are just a bad team for me and in 2002 I took my pregnant wife to Autzen and the rain came down sideways and Oregon lost 42-14. It was a miserable experience. Ok, I will say the only other good thing about them is that a good friend of mine, Trevor Highfield, was a three year starter, team cap and MVP player during 93-95 when they were really good. Recently caught up to Trevor and he's an assistant coach here on the East Coast. I still give him crap for choosing UW. He would have loved to play for an Oregon team but neither team was very good. Today, he'd be a Duck. It's a pretty heated rivalry and I encourage you to fly your Duck gear loudly and with pride! Go Ducks!
I used to hate the Huskies.... now the hatred has somewhat dimmed because they've been so shitty, but I'm sure it will come back if they continue to play well.
ABM, I really think when you're up visiting your squeeze during the UO/UW game, you need to load up on your Duck gear, find a good local bar and be passionate while we're kicking their Fusky ass. Be vocal! Let 'em know what real fans are like. Then, when you're let out of intensive care, make a few posts and let us know how it went.
You really should go to Husky Stadium for a UO/UW game, and you'll never look at the Huskies the same way again. Even when they've been shitty, they taunt UO fans. In 2009, they were chanting "Boise State" at my group of Duck fans, as well as talking about their split title from when many of them were toddlers. After the score got to be 36-6, though, some of us Duck fans had to break up fights between Husky fans, because some of them were openly bitching about Jake Locker, and others were defending St. Jake by the Lake. I HATE UW, and I never, ever root for them.
It wouldn't shock me if Stanford loses this game.... SO far those happy trees have played no one and UW looks solid! As for UW/ UO... we have to many weapons.....
It seemed (from a relative outsiders' perspective) that while UW regards WSU as the poor little brother, it regards UO as the annoying kid down the street that finally hit puberty and started sporting the 3-hair-moustache and thinks he's the cat's pajamas, except that the annoying kid is using that moustache to get dates with cheerleaders and elected to Prom Court while UW got grounded for getting a D in history. Eventually, though, I think that Sarkisian is going to build a bigger power in Seattle than Harbaugh built in Palo Alto. While Uncle Phil gives UO a tremendous advantage, the fact remains that LA and Seattle are the power markets of the Pac-12. Oregon needs to take advantage of this time b/w USC's decline and UW's rise to cement itself as a perennial elite (like Ohio State, SEC #1-4, Texas, etc.) And they're on their way, imo.
Another bad experience with classless UW fans was attending the Emerald Seattle Bowl when Fake Forrest kicked our butts. There were nearly as many Husky fans as Fakers and they were there for one reason - taunt Oregon fans, taunt our players and root for WF. Some of their signs were downright disgusting and would make a trucker blush...they also bought seats around the tunnel and had organized chants about how crappy we were. Oregon did really poorly in that game and Husky fans lined the exits, taunting Oregon fans. Yup...that's how they feel better about themselves. --I can understand Ducks putting away their gear in that ghetto place, but I never will. I just won't bring my wife anymore.
I do love pissing off fans from that region. I wanna taunt UW fans! Pissing Seattle Fans with Timbers gear was a great memory!
I guess that's why I can never understand how people from Portland can watch the Seahawks or Mariners.
For one half, a mediocre WSU team showed they are very beatable. Yes, I know how that game ended and I know Oregon has also struggled in certain halves too...but, Stanford is far from unbeatable.
I hear ya on that one. I dont particularly hate those teams. I just in principle dont like being told I have to like them just cause I live 4 hours away from them. I hate the city though. And if Sounders fans are any indication of the rest of them, they are asshats.
I grew up a Seahawk fan, my dad is a Seahawk fan. They are the only NFL team in the northwest, I love the NW. I'd much rather root for a team that I can easily drive a few hours to watch them play... instead of having to buy a plane ticket etc etc. The fact that they are on TV every week is a nice bonus. No Go Seahawks - Suck for Luck!
