get your mind out of the gutter pervert

im thinking of starting an entertainment memorabilia website, i own a great domain name... and i have a ridiculous shitload of crew shirts / guitar pics / backstage passes /setlists / etc, like a serious amount, that i have acquired over years of doing production work....as do many of my work friends, whom i could always buy supply from, for like a carton of cigs or some weed

my feeling is that i think i might be better off just doing ebay

It does not need to be one or the other. You can sell the items on ebay and link to that from your website. Hopefully, if you are smart at advertising and bringing eyes to your website, you can increase the number of people who either bid on your stuff via ebay or do the buy it now option.

If you have anything valuable I know the people at juliens auctions. You'll probably get more money that way.

...have you done keyword analysis of your "great domain name" and the overall theme that you are trying to target? Are you planning to build it yourself or outsource it? What is your budget for this venture?

the domain i have is buybackstage.com, not as catchy as "potlocator.com" but i think its a good one, a friend owned it but isnt doing anything with it, so he gave it to me, he has some cheesy shit up right now

there isnt really a nice site that is in this market right now as far as i can tell

i would design something modern and snazzy myself if i do this

as far as budget goes, thats kinda the point of the op, i dont want to waste a bunch of money for something i could just do on ebay

Yeah, probably not worth to do then.

I worked on a project like this a few years ago, we had THOUSANDS of vintage linen posters and lobby cards, we ended up giving it all away as a tax write off instead of bothering to sell...its a bitch to set it all up. Could have probably done SOMETHING with it but wasn't worth the time/effort according to the people we were dealing with.

My suggestion is sell it on amazon.com as a storefront. or maybe a yahoo builder store. you don't need any design, you just need a good way for people to find your stuff really. you can have the website link to an amazon store or something along those lines.

Yeah, I'd probably ebay it just to test market demand. If it seems to sell well, set up a simple Volusion storefront. Set up a basic Google Adwords campaign to help draw traffic. Go from there.

That's how my wife and I got started four years ago.

By the way, now is a great time to get ready for the holiday season with a fantastic recipe binder from CookbookPeople.com! (Just finished a store re-design.)

Yeah, ebay fees suck. Amazon is pretty expensive too, although we still use it.

If you want to build an e-commerce site without a ton of work, I really recommend Big Commerce. Very nice set of tools, and it's very user friendly.

Clever and made me LOL but the post would've been funnier if you had the avatar of that crazy looking dog in front of the door. I loved that one.
