Seems like there were three points:
    1) City is run by morons
    2) Voters are idiots, as exemplified by the mayor's survival after having an affair with a minor intern.
    3) The City is a disaster, as evidenced by "a bunch of bums camp(ing) out in two parks for nearly a month" and no plan to deal with it.

I had no idea that substandard brainpower, acceptance of statutory rape from your leadership and not dealing with large-scale criminal activity were either democratic or republican ideals.

Well, pedophilia is really pre-pubscent children, and whatever that guys name was, was just about 18. And while it is possible for late onset puberty, chances are that Sam Adams isn't into little boys. Especially when you consider that pedophiles tend to be heterosexual in nature.

Not condoning his activities, but we shouldn't accuse him of something far worse than what he did do.

Unless I'm missing some occasions of actual pedophilia within the offices of Sam Adams during his mayoral term.

btw, I realize that I had an ample opportunity to say "orifices of Sam Adams during his mayORAL term", but that would be too easy. Kind of like HCP's wife.

For what ever it's worth Adams never admitted to having sex with him until he turned 18.

For whatever its worth, I've met said pre-pubscent child right around the time Sam was elected. ( he was a leasing agent at The Wyatt ) Funny as it may be, he was more manly than Sam.

There was never a vote on keeping or not keeping Adams on as mayor, so I don't think voters can be blamed for his survival.

I was using BlazerBeav's words to show how this isn't the D or R issue that HCP wanted to make it.

On topic, though, weren't there multiple recall petitions that were attempted, and they couldn't get enough voters to sign? That apathy seems to be a way that voters can be blamed.

I don't recall (ha ha) the details, but it seems to me that the petitioners had some organizational issues that led to the failure. I would think that there would be plenty of recall signatures available in the city if you tried hard enough to find them.

Speaking of republican or democrat, what do you guys think about State Representative Jefferson Smith who is running for mayor? Went to middle school and HS with him. He's a good kid! I will admit, I am not into politics like I should be and enjoy reading all of your opinions in the OT forum. Wondering if you are a R or D do you vote and support people based solely based on his party alignment?

I am R. I have definite liberal ideas on some social issues though, and would vote for the best candidate regardless of party. All things being equal though, I would lean right.

Portland does not need another liberal running things. It needs a financial mind in the Mayoral office that isn't afraid to take some risks, give huge tax breaks to potential new business, and let the Indians build a damn floating casino on the Willamette, so the city can take advantage of the taxes it would produce for the city. Not to mention possibly getting a new stadium for an MLB team.

If it was Indians with a dot, they'd be building floating 7-11's on the Willamette.

Hell I'll build the city a new stadium . . . if they let me open up the only casino in downtown Portland. Cha-ching!

For whatever it's worth, had the intern been a 17 year old girl, he'd have been thrown out on his ass. Sam Adams has done nothing of note while in office, which is why he isn't running for reelection - his own polling showed his getting clobbered by anyone with any original ideas. We're once again going to be choosing between three liberals, but at least one has run a business.

I remember Adams saying that he'd have to campaign full time in order to win a second term, not that he'd get clobbered. He spun it like he was doing what was best for the city and all that, but he obviously isn't too confident in his chances.
