I live alone so I have no family to protect. So, for me, if I knew that I was not in danger, and there is no threat to loved ones, I simply wouldn't use deadly force. I would not blame others for using deadly force in a similar situation, just not something I would do. I don't have a gun at the moment, but I used to have a 38. But I had that gun as insurance to the world going crazy during a natural disaster or something like that. Also, I am Jewish and think all Jews should be able to defend themselves incase shit acts up again. I gave my gun away to old girlfriend who was being harassed by an ex, I think it's time for me to get a new one.
For most of my life, I've always said I would not shoot someone over stealing my stuff. Always felt I would rather buy more stuff than to live with having killed someone, no matter how much they deserved it. I live in Lane County, and they 'matirx out' people who are arrested for home invasion (B&E w/owners home), usually in under 24 hours. That puts these sleaze bags back on the street, doing the same thing, the next day. Since that has become so common around here, I've changed my attitude about not shooting people in my house uninvited in the middle of the night. Now it's, break in my house, get your ticket punched. You have to make some kind of effort not to kill them though. That sounds fair enough. There is no slick response for this topic.
As an aside: I think (although I may be wrong) that I could do a month of solitary confinement standing on my head. Not literally--I'd be lucky to stay on my head for longer than 30 seconds--but I don't think that it would be that bad. As long as I was fed and I had somewhere to relieve myself... those 7200 hours would be a snap. Ed O.
Philosophically, I think that someone who illegally enters my house should have a reasonable expectation that I will kill them. Would it be just? I don't know. If they are starving and they enter to take food, at some ethical level they may be justified. Would it be legal? It depends on where I live, what they were doing when I shot them, etc. Would I do it? Not now--I don't have a house or a gun. Ed O.
It all depends on the situation. Like if they are holding a knife and come after you. Or what if they're running off your property and you shoot them in the back? There is a limit to the amount of force you should use.
Philosophically, why? Why is there a limit? If they are running off of your property, they might end up at your mothers, or sisters another night and kill or rape them? Why do they have to be holding a knife? What if they know martial arts and can damage you for ever with a kick or hit to the face or spine? I have just never understood the line of thinking that they have to have a weapon for them to be considered dangerous. True story: When I was in high school we had a very good hockey team. One game this punk kept slashing me in my calf, right above my skate. Kept calling me a pussy and such trying to provoke me. Well, I had had enough, and we dropped our gloves and sticks. However, I took my helmet and whipped him across the face. I broke his jaw, eye socket and nose. While a helmet can be used as a weapon, he had one as well. What's to stop a dirty thief from hitting you across the face and causing permanent damage
Yeah it is called Manslaughter that's why. It is part of the Legal System and always has been. It exists for crazy people that use excessive force.
Philosophically you're saying Manslaughter is never possible? That's unlikely. So philosophically, you need to prove your case in court. Each case has mitigating circumstances, that even the Supreme Court says, one must take into account.
Somewhat related, but I didnt feel like making a new thread about this.... Yesterday morning some dude broke into my cousins house and was watching the TV and playing the piano. She was sleeping downstairs and called the cops and my other cousin Greg. Greg came over and knocked this dude out when he reached in his pocket. I usually wander into houses if I walk by them and the doormat says, welcome. I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet, but I'm wondering if Greg punched him because he wanted to knock the dude out for being an idiot, or if the dude was really grabbing in his pocket.
