Can somebody who understands exactly what this means break it down? What's it going to take to make it happen, how long? Ramifications?
It means the end of the union. The owners would be subject to anti-trust laws instead of labor/collective bargaining law. The players would lose all of the things they gained in collective bargaining, like minimum salaries, pension, guaranteed contracts, etc. The players would be free to negotiate, individually, any contract they want with a team.
Not only will we get replacement players, but when mid level guys are in danger of losing their homes and such, we will see them as well.
If there is no union, how can there be "scabs"? I can't believe low and mid-level players would vote to cut their own throats to make the elite players even richer. It's madness.
Man I'm so relieved after reading this thread. I read the title and thought we were decertifying Denny's board and moving somewhere else. I hate having to move with the holidays coming.
The owners will lose $350M each, if the players leave for Europe and China and are permanently replaced by scabs. With attendance at about 4000 per game, the owners won't take in enough money to pay fixed bills like arena rent, etc. With a bankrupt league, they'll lose their entire investments in the teams.
I think it ultimately means the same thing, one is voluntary and the other is involuntary. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/940270-nba-lockout-players-reject-ultimatum-plan-to-decertify
does it seem to anyone else like the union strategy has been to avoid a rank-and-file vote at all costs?
