I'd be terrified if I were a player knowing that Billy Hunter is a complete idiot.

    It's just an empty threat.

I'd rather see a different group of money men restart up the old ABA.

    New Jersey

    Anaheim

    Pittsburgh

    Vegas

    Seattle

    San Diego

I don't think its feasible to start a new league with the same blueprint as the NBA. But they could do something like the ultimate fighter reality show on Spike that is large reason the UFC has become so popular. The NBPA could market something outside the box with success. Heck I'd tune it to a reality show if it only showed the NBPA meetings. If they added some basketball tournament with a twist that cuts Lebron from his team survival style I bet many people would watch.

Go ahead and try it. First you'll need a lot of capital to start up the venture.

Then you'll need places to play, and all the money that it takes to have that. ooh, and paying for food, doctors, insurance, flying, where you're staying, selling TV time, radio time, marketing...

Go right ahead and give it a try.

Remember it? It led to the greatest Darius Miles' quote of all time!

I still have no idea what he's saying but it's pure gold!

The D-League has all that and teams don't cost much. It can all be done cheaply and then if they get one national TV contract, voila, the big money is back, but not as much.

The D league has that because of the NBA paying it's way.

If the (former) NBA players want to play in high school gyms, in front of 900 people and have no TV or radio, have at it.

How long would it take for this new league to establish itself? 10 years? 20 years? I doubt the players will be willing to wait that long.

If this happens, NBA will reopen its doors. The average to good players will choose to play in a league that can pay them decent money. Incoming college players dream of playing in the NBA not Billy Hunter's Fantasy League so they will also choose the NBA. This is such an empty threat.

The subsidy from the NBA isn't so enormous. A few hundred thousand per team.

The first year will be something more than 900. The second year, maybe average 5000. The third year, maybe 8000. Ever started a business?

If not much time has passed with no basketball, then the same owners can re-create the same financial picture. But if a couple years have passed and media and sponsorship contracts have expired, owners will find the offers less now. The more time that passes, the more the league will be re-created from scratch.

So the big money will be less big, the more the years pass. If the lockout goes on say, 2 seasons, then the financial beginning points of a new separate league and the old league wouldn't be all that far apart.

Again, can players go this long without NBA money?

We shall see. Also, can the owners go without money for long? From the OP article:

the flaw in your theory is that the NBA owns the NBDL (in as much as they broadcast games, have contractual agreements with NBAtv to show games, etc).

It's not just as easy as they think it is.

The owners pockets are much much much MUUUUUCH deeper, and unlike the NBA players, the vast majority of their income isn't depending on the NBA.
