rumor is Michigan has pulled the offer of *4 TE/DE verbal commit Pharaoh Brown following his OV to Oregon last weekend. Rivals no longer lists him as a commit

Stanford kid is a good get.

I am still looking for more help on both lines and in the secondary to make me breathe easier

D-Line is set, and O-line needs some help. Watching the USC game, though, it was clear that WR is the weak link of the UO offense this year. That should change with all of the RS guys this year. I also expect Vaughn to improve dramatically after a full year in the system. The secondary is fine as well. It's just very young, other than Pleasant.

Stanford is exactly the kind of commit that excites me. Big, strong, fast, intelligent (good GPA) and knows he has areas to work on. Big target to throw to and should be an excellent blocker. He's got a great frame - standing next to a DE - he looks nearly as wide and solid.

Exciting news as most of us were waiting for that big time WR.

He's got great yards after catch, stiff arms and jukes in this vid! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOya1QAPbQc

I have to laugh at Scout having Stanford as a 3-star. The guy was offered by tOSU, LSU, 'Bama, etc., yet the Husky Honks at Scout of course have to downgrade him since he's an Oregon commit.

Had UW got the verbal, I assume he'd be elevated to a 5-star. ;)

In fairness to the bias that is Scout, 247 sports also has him listed as a 3*. Both ESPN and Rivals have him as a 4* though

No idea if there are any other scouting sites

true, but I believe 247 is run by former scout people. Or is it that Hopkins was at Scout before?

either way, I'm very excited about this get. Thanks for the text to start off the day with this good news Stomp!

OK. I finally shelled out for ESPN Insider (they let us opt out of ESPN the Magazine now, which is fantastic; I actually didn't renew partly because I was sick of getting that oversized magazine in my mailbox every two weeks and having to recycle it).

As a result, I should be able to post more info about recruiting, etc. I enjoy all the rumors and announcements we share with one another here and hoping to give back a little more than I have. :)

First thing? A blog post from a couple of days ago about Arik Armstead where he recapped his Oregon visit. Some quotes from him:

He is still going to visit Texas (on Dec 9) and Auburn (at some point in December).

He also said that he met with Altman and likes where the basketball team is headed AND that he wants to make a decision in December (although he doesn't have a firm deadline for himself).

hmmm if Armstead truly feels that way (about being most comfortable) that could bode very well for us. Especially if is his parents really loved the trip too. Thanks!

More on Pharaoh Brown from a Nov 23 blog entry on ESPN.com:

Looking at the teams recruiting him, Michigan, Nebraska and Oregon appear to be the "big boys" in terms of best programs... Vandy is the only SEC team that's offered to him, it appears.

Anyway, it's interesting that Oregon looks like they're willing to give players what they want, in terms of playing a position, to get them in the door. IIRC, letting DAT play on offense was important to luring him to Eugene...

On Armstead, I've heard that even though he will be visiting Texas and Auburn that they're not serious players for him(unless they impress the shit out of him) because everybody is saying he's going to stay on the West Coast.

If he stays in the West, I bet he's either gonna go back to USC or he'll be playing for the Ducks... Oregon is the only team out west that he did one of his five official visits to.

When he first uncommitted from USC, he had this to say:

(From an Oct 17 story; not Insider.)

Interesting how quickly things have shifted for him...

Interesting stuff on Arik Ed. From what I gather it's a two horse race for his talents between us and Cal. Your thoughts on Pharoah touch on a key difference between Oregon and others... we let the players choose their position, the coaches decide who plays. Kelly feels he gets a more committed player if they're going out for the spot they want to play at.

btw... on OVs for the OSU game were recent stud RB commit Byron Marshall, TE Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick who is a HS teammate of QB commit Jake Rodriguez, and RB Ryan McDaniel

according to chatter, it's probably down to us and Iowa for *4 DT Faith Ekakitie. Here's a link to his blog... http://faithflex.com/ He's yet to post his thoughts on his Oregon-USC visit but it should be any day

Really too bad DeForest Buckner couldn't make it here last Saturday. I like tall defensive lineman, anything to make those throwing lanes seem ever smaller is okay with me.

from what I gather, Oregon is high on Buckner's wish list so he'll be out when he can. HS football playoff games have been getting in the way.

The Ducks definitely seem to target the sort of taller defensive lineman you prefer. It's rare for them to go after someone who doesn't fit that description

I don't really understand the whole "scout bias" recruiting routine. Star ratings are subject, at best, anyway. Sometimes scout has someone higher, other times not. But, ratings are what they are.

Also don't understand the claim scout jacks up UW recruits, when they only have two four stars and the remaining are two and three. I've noticed a few changes in grade as more player info comes out, but haven't seen any significant bias.

Last thought - rivals and scout use a different star rating matrix. Pay more attention to the number ranking national/state. I've seen scout rank a player higher nationally, but have a lower star rating compared to rivals.

Either way, the value of either is subjective.
