Chicago Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf on Wednesday reiterated through a team spokesman that he would give strong consideration to incurring the luxury tax if the player acquisition gave the team a reasonable chance to win a championship. That answer is similar in sentiment to Reinsdorf's response on the subject from a 2009 interview. However, with a more punitive luxury tax poised to take effect in 2013-14 of the pending 10-year collective bargaining agreement, as well as increased revenue sharing, the question applied anew. We'll see. As we know from the white towel White Sox fiasco he's not afraid to bail if he doesn't see a reasonable championship opportunity. I do believe he'll pay what it takes if there is truly a contender to be had in his analysis.
He's really given every indication he loves baseball and that the Bulls are a printing press for money. He really wants to win the World Series. He wouldn't mind winning the NBA championship, but it's not the priority. That's my sense, anyway.
No question that Reinsdorf cares more about his baseball team than his basketball team. Maybe it's because I'm a Sox fan that I've never had a problem with this. This said, I have no doubt that Reinsdorf wants his teams to win championships period. If this isn't true, then he got pretty lucky 6 times.
