3 years @ $30mil - with the 3rd year being the team option?

I know these kind of numbers seem rather ludicrous relative to Greg's body of work, but, considering the investment that's already been made in the kid, it would be extremely difficult for me to see him walk after this season if he's able to put it all together.

BTW, that 3rd year being the team option would be the clincher for me to pull the trigger on this one. $20mil seemed like a reasonable risk if he didn't pan out.

 

I would. Maybe make it a mutual or player option if he hits bench marks of 65 games played each year or something.Or, a percentage, since 665 this season is tough.

 

Is that something that can be offered at any time during the season if he accepts the qualify offer for example?

 

Just in time for the new CBA to kick in. Sounds like a good plan. And if he pans out to be something special; we could give him a contract extending his services. This is starting to look like a great season!

 

I read Chandler and Nene want the max. If Greg has any kind of good health this season, he's worth more than either of those two. Stay tuned.

Nene and Chandler are delusional then. Still they are both healthy and productive over the last few seasons. Signing Oden to a large, risky deal is the kind of decision that gets a GM fired. I don't see a lot of teams throwing huge dough at him even if he plays most of this season.

 

It would Okur to me that you'll see more financial risks taken on "big" men than any other type of player/position.

Here's an idea:

Trade The Blazers (your team) for another...The Rockets? Spurs? Mavs? cus team you got will never be good enough for you.

That would be perfect IMO. Give time to really establish his value, and make some cake in the process.

 

I would definitely not give Oden anything beyond this year. I don't believe he'll ever be a healthy, productive NBA player, and to give him a 3-year contract is simply throwing good money after bad.

 

You see, this is where you are wrong. I love Aldridge, Batum, Wallace, Oden, Camby, Matthews as a non starter, Smith. I think I will like Felton as well. I don't like Roy, Nate or the idiots int he front office that continue to re-up them. Positives far outweighing the negatives. However, Oden has had 2 MF surgeries, and the smart thing to do would be to try and get some value for him via trade. With this team not being in a position to realistically compete for a title right now, keeping Wallace and Camby doesn't make a lot of sense either.... even though I like all three players. If you are not building to win a title, you are failing as a sports organization

 

I see this as a throwaway season.

San Antonio has NEVER been given credit for winning it all in 1999.

Therefore, to me, this season is about seeing if Oden is worth building around, then throwing players in around him the get by.

What?? Every other team in the NBA was trying to win the title that year. I don't remember anybody pretending that the season didn't count, or that a championship would mean less just because the season was shortened. San Antonio won the title that year, and it's in the history books. End of story.

 

....yep. and, sadly so, the operative word when describing SA's championship that year has always been...... "asterisk".

 

If the positives far outweigh the negatives, then why is it not realistic that we can compete for a title? Were a healthy Greg Oden away from competing, Straight up, just like the Magic were a couple years back.

And you got a lot of evidence to believe that. Sure it's a gamble, but it's a bet the Trail Blazers took a long time ago, and I acknowledge them for seeing their plan out against all the pundits criticism.

Look, if you want to be realistic, Oden is our ONLY chance of a title this DECADE. Portland has always, and will always need an extraordinary big-man to win in the West and like it or not that's what their shooting for.

 

I would definitely do that deal. However, I would guess it's too low for Oden to sign.

 

Let's think about this. If Oden has another season-ending injury this year, which he probably will, do you think he'll even try to come back again? I don't. I think he'll just retire, in which case we'll be paying him millions for two more seasons that we'll never get out of him. Why not just sign him to a one-year contract, and see how it goes?

 

If you base your whole premise on him having another season-ending injury then yes, it would make sense to do a one year contract like you say. However, the Blazers made a bet, they honestly believe that the second MF gave G.O. what he needs to stay strong. I believe it too, and now is the only time to ensure that he stays with the Blazers.

You say the Worst possible scenario is signing G.O. long term and him breaking down again? Well I say the Worst possible scenario is him getting rock solid and leaving the Blazers to thrive somewhere else.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply either of them are worth it. I hope to god neither of them make more than $10mil, or else the lockout was more of a joke than I thought. Whatever they get though will help set the bar for signing Greg next season, if he remains healthy. Healthy Greg, with a little seasoning, is an all-star.
