According to the Baldfather, DFW, the UFC is ready to announce the inclusion of a new weight class--flyweight--of 116-lbs. to 125-lbs., as early as this weekend during the UFC 140 festivities. White has expressed interest in adding the division for most of 2011 and now the company is poised to get it done, perhaps encouraged by the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter in which several flyweights, including eventual bantamweight winner John Dodson, impressed. The division would give the UFC an eighth championship and 30-50 more fighters to work into their ever-increasing schedule of programming.
Re: UFC set to introduce 125-lbs. flyweight division, announcement coming this weeken 125-lbs. is currently the smallest recognized men's weight class by the unified rules. The Shooto flyweight division in Japan is 115-lbs., otherwise known as strawweight (aka minimumweight), but that division seems especially unlikely for the UFC. The lightest weight class for women is 100-lbs., their version of flyweight, with most fights taking place between 115-145lbs.
Re: UFC set to introduce 125-lbs. flyweight division, announcement coming this weeken Notable flyweights: John Dodson, Ian McCall, Dustin Ortiz, Jussier da Silva, Yasuhiro Urushitani, Shinichi Kojima, Mitsuhisa Sunabe, Rambaa Somdet, Will Campuzano, Josh Rave, Brandon Merkt, and Darrell Montague. Team Alpha Male`s Joe Benavidez is another candidate for the weight class and the most likely fighter from the UFC`s current bantamweight division to drop down and make a serious title run.
