I wouldn't trade for Korver and Bogans. I would rather grab guys off the scrap heap, like TMac last year, and Rip this. I certainly wouldn't give up the draft picks. They have to want to shed contracts after the season for anything like that to make sense.

But I like your thinking. I would love to see Jackson as our SG and he can play some SF in a pinch, too. As can Rip.

How about both? Then we don't have to play Deng 47 minutes a night.

Update: Hamilton was officially waived by the Pistons on Monday, Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Recommendation: It’s now official that he won’t be back in Detroit, but that was common knowledge. Rip is expected to sign with the Bulls and could reclaim a consistent fantasy-relevant role as their starting shooting guard. With enough minutes Hamilton could average close to 20 points a night, and the extended range he’s added to his shooting the last few seasons could mean we see him hit a career-high in three-pointers this season.

I'm as excited as the next guy about the impending Hamilton signing. But twenty points a game??? I'd be willing to wager all of my material possessions that he won't hit twenty per game.

He's only been a 20 PPG scorer twice in his career, and came close another 2 times.

That said, he averaged 18.7 per 36 minutes last season. He could get 36 MPG for us. That's taking about 16 FGA per game. Our guards, aside from Rose, took about 22 FGA per game last season. That's including Korver.

Don't get my hopes up! I remember what Bogans did last year for the team on nights when he scored six points a game.

Rose could get another 3 assists per game just off Rip's points. Rip has been good for 3-4 assists himself - almost as many as Korver, Bogans, and Brewer combined for us last season.

The more I think about it, the better this signing could be for us. Rip could be our Ray Allen.

I completely agree. The problem is that I'm relying on what people have told me about Rip and his numbers -- I just didn't watch much Pistons ball last season. His numbers tailed off pretty steeply last season, but not his efficiency. Let's hope this isn't a situation where his physical skills completely give out right at the time the Bulls sign him.

    Nutsack, meet rusty butter knife?

He's not going to average 20 PPG. He only did that twice in his career when he was a championship caliber team's best scorer. He did score 14.1 PPG in 27 MPG last season. Is he done or something? What would he score for us in 32 MPG or 36?

Looks like its gonna be Rip.

JAMAL wants more than Uncle Jerry is paying anyway.

Not sure what to think about this, given that I have not seen Rip play a lot anytime recently and my mental image of him is not what I had in mind for the player the Bulls needed.

Here's a video from a recent good game. Granted, it looks like meaningless March NBA basketball with no D, but does not look too bad. Looks like we'll have to give him a shot!

I wonder if he's gonna be able to wear the headband? Why do we have that rule again? I never understood it.

I'm surprisingly not concerned right now. I think we would have heard more tension from the Bulls beat writers if this wasn't in the bag. They all seem to be reporting the move with increasing confidence. If Rip doesn't sign by the end of the day tomorrow . . . well . . . then all bets are off.

Thanks for making me look at his career statistics. They're remarkably consistent. Rip, starting with his second year in the league, put up ten seasons where he averaged between 17 and 20 points per game. It was only last season where he fell off in production, and as you have noted, it was accompanied by a drop in playing time from 33 minutes per minutes per game to 27 minutes per game. Given that his efficiency was strong, the numbers make you feel pretty comfortable about the pickup.

The Bulls were 30-3, including the playoffs, when Keith Bogans scored six points last season. What would an average of 14 points from their starting shooting guard give them?

Check this out. I did a really advanced, technical, nuanced statistical analysis, i.e., grade school math.

14.1 (Rip ppg last season) / 27 (Rip mpg last season) * 33 (Rip mpg two seasons ago) = 17.2

meaning that if Rip played his regular thirty-three minutes per game there's a reasonable chance he would have averaged between 17 and 20 points per game, like he has consistently in the past.

If we had a scoring SG, we'd run out to big leads early in most games. As you pointed out, our record was ridiculously good when Bogans scored just 6 points and with Rip that's almost assured and then some.
