Not that sad it didn't happen considering none of the picks would be lottery picks most likely

I'm glad this deal is dead, and I hope the Blazers don't end up making a move as dumb as this. Gerald Wallace for draft picks? They would probably not even be lottery picks.

I think our chances of re-couping a player of Wallace's level through those picks or via a FA signing would be very slim. I"d be really upset if the Blazer's did this.

Wallace is our 2nd best player and is very fun to watch. It would put a serious damper on our season if we dealt him.

I'm suprised that some of you were actually ok with this.

4 first rounders...great but take a look at draft history, the bottom half of the 1st round is filled with mostly scrubs and guys who didn't last long in the nba.

in April 2013 (17 months from now), what are you going to have for Gerald Wallace?

    A) Nothing.
    B) Four first-round picks(or whatever they would bring) from the deepest draft in a decade.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I'm just a lot more skeptical about the value of draft picks, perhaps. Unless they're top-five or maybe top-ten, I don't think they have a ton of value as trade assets (except, perhaps, in a situation where a desperate team is trying to unload a star before he bolts and thinks "draft picks" are a face-saving return allowing them to sell their future to fans).

I'm pretty sure the picks are spread out to 2014 or 15

    NJ 2012, 2014, 2016, and Houston lottery protected 2012.

4 first rounders in deep draft? No. A pick 5 years from now? Yes.

even with your reasoning (which I've seen posted nowhere, but whatever), what's your answer? A, or B?

My reasoning? Mine actually makes sense You say we get 4 first rounders from the same draft. I see twitter saying NJ offered up 2012, 14, 16 and Houston lotto protected 12. So you can't parade it as getting 4 picks in 2012. Very likely we get 1 pick in this draft from that trade, NJ's. And the option isn't that or nothing.

Maybe I'm overvaluing them, but when you are about to enter into a very strong draft class like this year it just seems like you increase your odds of either A) finding a guy who can really play when you've got multiple cracks at it, or B) you have some leverage or opportunities to combine picks together and maybe move up if you have a specific guy in mind or C) when you've got multiple picks and cap room, it makes trading for good players for nothing but pick(s) more probable.

If there was ever a draft to have multiple #1s, it's this one!

    A) Yeah it is, unless you think we're re-upping a 31y/o SF to keep playing in front of Batum. Unless you use those picks in a trade, like I said, or just use the picks...the options are that Crash is gone in 17 months for absolutely nothing, or a trade. Like this one.
    B) I haven't seen the twitter saying 12, 14, 16. I saw ORL, HOU, NJN 12, and Amick said there was a 4th one. Of course I could be wrong, and it seems as if it changed all day, but it seems as if you've been pooh-poohing this the whole time and have been wrong with it for much of the time.
    C) Even if it was "Very likely" that we only had 2 picks this 1st round (and I don't, but I'll go with it for the sake continuing this), explain to me again what we paid to get Wallace in the first place? Wasn't it one late 1st rounder in the next draft, and one pick 3 drafts from that trade? What more do you think you're going to get from Wallace before he walks (potentially in 5 months, more likely in 17) than --in your scenario-- 4 first round picks spread over the next 5 years?
    D) First round picks are the most liquid asset in the league. Even if you don't like young players in deep drafts, other GMs do. And since you can't wheel and deal for 3M every time you want a pick, there's a premium on them.

:sigh: You're saying that you don't think there's one player from 11 onward that can help our team?

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I'm sure there is. In every draft, there are players in the second half of the first round and even the second round who end up becoming big contributors. However, the chances of actually selecting those players, with your specific draft picks, is low (for obvious reasons...they drop that low because there are major question marks and it's a massive amount of guesswork as to which players will overcome their question marks).

In a way that would really make a difference?

    Nah, not likely.

where was I pooh poohing it the whole time? There was 3 picks, then at the end, 4. And only one mention of which picks. 12, 12, 14, 16. Never saw orlando's mentioned, except by you, which seems just stupid on theface of it, for a team rebuilding through a deal to give up their own pick. You bought into that, though, when you saw 3 picks, you immediately assumed it HAD to be 3 picks in this draft, then 4, somehow. I haven't been down on it, or wrong about it at all, and have no clue what difference any of that makes to this. Looks like, it isn't 4 picks in this draft, though. Yes, options are he is gone at the end of his dfela in 17 months, or we have that time to explore trades. You present it as we have this option(we don't, since Orlando doesn't like it) or else he can not be traded at all, and then he is gone and we get nothing,a nd that's the exception i take with your question. It isn't a one or the other. Hanging on to him, we still have the ability to trade him.
