<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Recently acquired point guard Sebastian Telfair wants to ask Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell to request that the Celtics unretire his jersey number 31. Telfair has always worn the number because he?s from 31st Street in Brooklyn, but the number was retired by the Celtics in Maxwell's honor. ?I just got his phone number,? Telfair said. ?I?m going to call him.?</div>I think that number is pretty selfish on Telfairs part. This number was retired in a players honor and he wants it unretired because its the same number as the street he grew up on. Pretty selfish to me...http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives...rsey_number_31/
I guess I can see where hes coming from. The number is real special to him. And hes worn it all his basketball career. But it does seem a little extreme to want to have it unretired.
No harm in asking. The number has been worn after him to, most recently by Joe Johnson. I doubt it will happen though.
Even Danny Ainge has said that we have too many retired numbers, but even then, this is a little wierd. I mean cool, it means something to Bassy and he's never really worn a different number. Ced is a very nice guy, and I expect a polite "sorry kid." I mean if I was Maxwell and an unproven young PG asked me to unretire my jersey # so he could wear it, I wouldn't accept. Maxwell has done a great deal for this organization and had a spectacular NBA career, and having your jersey number retired is a huge honor. Why give that up?
Yeah I know. Danny is right, we have gone way overboard with the retired numbers. I mean right now these #'s are available: 8, 11, 12 (but will be Allan Ray), 20, 26, 27, 28, 29, 36+ By the way, I didn't count 0, 9, and 30 in there because that's Powe, Rondo, and Telfair. But that's crazy.

Ced didnt put up spectacular numbers, but still. Come on, their not going to un-retire a number. He should just play with number a different number. It is hard though, because I understand that the Celtics have 21 retired numbers
If I was Maxwell, I definitely would not give the Celtics permission to unretire my number and allow Telfair, who hasn't proved anything on the NBA level, to wear it.
If I was Ced, I'd say to Telfair ; Prove me something in the NBA, prove you deserve to be here, prove something to the Boston organazation. And I'll unretire the number. It would serve as a inscentive to be the best he can be, and he'd get his number back if he plays well..
Everyone said what I was about to...Who does Telfair think he is for even considering asking that? Maxwell helped the Celtics win 2 NBA titles and he still the Celtics all-time leader in FG%, shooting an amazing .56%. Telfair has yet to prove a thing in the NBA.

I don't like this start for Telfair. I know he wants to represent where he is from, but very disrespectful to a legend of a franchise that brought him in to be their point guard.Maxwell better decline and tell him how disrespectful that is.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>yeah i know what you mean, it's not like he won finals mvp or anything.</div>I almost typed in that same comment dogma hahaThis is stupid and talk about putting Cedric in an awkward position. Ced is still involved in the organization, he does radio commentary for the Celtics. If I were Cedric I would tell Telfair...ok you want me, a finals MVP on a championship Celtics team to let an unproven two year veteran out of high school unretire my number.....then I would laugh at him. Just wear #30 Telfair, ask to change your number when you actually PROVE something in this league.
wait. has anyone ever "unretired" their number before? hahahai'd do it for a million. see how bad he wants it. lol i'd be like. okay sure. 2 million cash money. thanks.hahaha i doubt he does it though. like what you guys said.
I just though of something. What if Telfair gets to wear the #, does really well in Boston, plays the rest of his career there, and becomes worthy of jersey retirement. What will they do? Retire to of the same numbers?
