That sounds risky to me. Maybe they want the flexibility should D12 become available? Either way, you have to be somewhat concerned Derrick will have a change of heart after a bad playoff beatdown, which of course, is always possible.

If they don't extend Rose this offseason, the Bulls would have the full MLE next offseason rather than just the mini-MLE. However, I don't know if this has anything to do with the delay.

They Bulls and Rose would have announced that this was their plan, right? Instead we're hearing that it's a done deal and forthcoming but not executed. It feels like Reinsdorf may be negotiating with Rose for less than the full max, but we shall see.

    Yes. We shall see.

There are so many different possible reason why nothing is signed yet. No time for panic.

Rose agrees to 5 year extension. Saw it in Yahoo! yesterday.

We should be happy today. A great debut from Rip followed by Rose agreeing to a 5 year extension. These are very good things.

    Random thought.

I beginning to find David Aldridge of nba.com and the NBA channel to be more than a little offensive. He spent the lockout leaking state-sponsored stories from David Stern. That's fine. Journalism is a decimated field and I don't begrudge anyone trying to put food on the table.

A couple of nights ago on the NBA channel, though, Aldridge got holier than thou. Aldridge made the comment "That's why I don't report on rumors" in response to talk around the table about the Paul trade and the NBA's decision to nix the Houston trade.

It's one thing to espouse your employer's point of view and straddle the line between public relations and journalism. Again I understand that hard times lead to desperate measures. It's quite another to criticize your fellow journalists for actually . . . um . . . doing their jobs.

David Aldridge, yeah, I'm just about done with you.

You're more angst-ridden than usual, SST! Anyway, good to see that it's done, and that the addition of Rip has a multiplicative, not just additive effect.

    Go Bulls!

It doesn't look like it was a max deal to me, Denny.

    58 044 000 (salary cap) * .3 (max) = $17,413,200
    17 413 200 * 1.075 (7.5% raise) = $18,719,190
    18 719 190 * 1.075 (7.5% raise) = $20,123,129
    20 123 129 * 1.075 (7.5% raise) = $21,632,364
    21 632 364 * 1.075 (7.5% raise) = $23,254,791

    $17,413,200 + $18,719,190 + $20,123,129 + $21,632,364 + $23,254,791 =

    $101,142,674

If Rose only got paid 94 million there's a different of about 7 million dollars.

Edit: I wish I could only get paid 94 million dollars :-).

I'm pretty sure it's the max.

You could be right, Jay. I learned yesterday that with max contracts you don't have to specify the starting money in dollar terms. Durant is going to be paid the max 30% possible to him under the Derrick Rose rule even though he was only allowed 25% when he entered his extension.

The Bulls may have given Rose a max contract and are predicting a decrease in BRI, whereas I projected it to stay flat.

There's lots of media reporting it as a max contract, but K.C. doesn't mention it, and I think he would have.

    Sam called it the max.

I asked the question for two reasons.

    1) He deserves the max, obviously. If he doesn't, then who does?
    2) If he took less than max, then he was leaving some room for management to extend his teammates.
