To me, it seems like it is.

Maybe I'm in the wrong circles, but does anyone actually read the recommendations or networks there? People seem to just aggregate contacts for the hell of it.

I'll have to admit I don't see the point either.

I joined a bunch of groups too, for the most part they are complete fluff and scammers. On my timeline there is little to no engagement between contacts. I've posted a few relevant topics, thoughts, opportunities, but people don't seem to interact enough.

Kind of handy if you are trying to research a company before going in for a sales presentation. You can find out the CEO used to own a flyfishing store, giving you ideas for what might interest him. If you are going in for a job interview and you know the interviewer's name you can look them up and learn more about them. Maybe they used to work at a company you used to be employed by or something.

Also, if a company is researching you they can see what others have said about your professional performance, which can be nice.

It's great for sales and job hunting, but otherwise....yeah, I don't really get it.

I've hooked up with people I worked with 20 years ago. It's also neat for me to see what they've been doing since.

It's basically nothing more than a social network, but I did have a friend who got a job tip from someone on there. He actually got the job after that person recommended him as well. I guess the best thing to say is it can't hurt
