Okay so if it's essentially not a qo then would that mean he is a restricted free agent this summer?

Kemp's last year with Portland was 2001-02. Barrett didn't become the play-by-by guy until 2003-04. He did WNBA games before taking over for Pete Pranica, Eddie Doucette, or whoever was the TV guy at the time.

As I said in my post above, I don't think Greg had the choice to sign the Qualifying Offer. Once his medical tests were reviewed by the Blazers, they probably approached Greg and his agent and indicated that they were going to have to pull the QO and instead presented the lesser contract.

I think you're partially right, but he'll never be a max contract guy. No insurance company would ever insure his deal and the new CBA is going to make that exceedingly difficult to give him such a deal. The only team that could theoretically "max" him would be the Blazers, but that doesn't work out logically, because if they intended to give him such a contract they would have done it as an extension last fall.

The likeliest thing is that he knew he couldn't pass a physical if he got an offer sheet, the Blazers figured this out and knew he wouldn't be ready to play for most of the year and so they prorated his QO to the games the expect he'll be able to play in or just as a flier to keep his bird rights.

My only gripe is with the asinine assertion that he gave back money out of some kind of karmic motive.

Or, it will help relieve him of some guilt when he leaves Portland for another team.

Yet he (likely) didn't. He took the best deal he could get.

I think he is an UFA. Storyteller suggested he was an RFA, but then I think I saw somewhere on here that new info suggested UFA. Maybe someone else can clear that up.

Storyteller was pretty emphatic that GO is not an RFA this summer.

FWIW - Buchanan is on record saying that they did not consider not-signing him - http://www.blazersedge.com/2011/12/...cting-gm-chad-buchanan-takes-questions-on-roy

I doubt any team is willing to give him a max contract next summer, but if he can play well by the end of the year, he'll get a deal starting at upwards of $10 mil per year. That's what even mid-range big men get in the NBA and, given what Greg could mean to a team if he's finally able to turn the page on his injury problems for a few years, he's going to get an offer in that range, IMO. As for the exact reasoning behind Greg's decision to take less money, yeah, I doubt that it was just out of the goodness of his heart. Business is business and both sides were trying to do the best to protect their interests.

Well that sucks. I was hoping that you could restructure the contract like a new one, since it's not part of his rookie one. I believe storyteller so it must be true

He'll definitely be an UFA. The only advantage that Portland will have is that they will still hold his Bird rights and, therefore, can make him a significantly better offer than anyone else.
