Alex Ovechkin scored a pair to grab the Washington Capitals lead in goals. Alexander Semin had another multipoint game. Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist.

And the Buffalo Sabres suffered another major injury, likely losing high-priced defenseman Christian Ehrhoff for weeks.

If the Capitals are going to be a threat once again in the Eastern Conference, their best players need to be their best players. It's finally starting to happen. The top line was on form Friday night for the second game in a row, a 3-1 win over the hard-luck Sabres.
