Agreed. Just a few months ago a bunch of Portland fans were clamoring at us to get Petrie as our GM? Why? The guy has built a crap roster with loads of high draft picks. Claiming Outlaw for $12 million off amnesty? Re-acquiring John Salmons for $25 million? Giving Marcus Thorton over $30 million? That roster is horrific.

Thank gosh we don't have him running the Blazers show. I gotta admit our scouting department and Vulcans are doing a solid job.

The same reason shitty coaches keep signing contract extensions. People hire other people they are familiar with

I think you used to see this with GM's too, owners kept giving the jobs to their favorite former players. We have seen a trend with more GM's recently coming from the scouting department with heavy statistics backgrounds lately. Very cerebral GM's. Maybe teams eventually will trend the same way with head coaches and give a Tom Thibodeaul or Scott Brooks or Eric Spolstra or Monty Williams the nod as a great assistant. Thats gotta be better then a "proven" coach, who's only proven to be poor.

I honestly don't think there are that many options out there. Fans keep saying give someone new a chance and I am sure there are some decent ones out there, but no one that is a difference maker. But Wesphal to me never seemed like a good coach. I did not get that hire at all. Not sure what Geoff was thinking with that hire.

Never understood the hire. Westphal left the NBA ranks to coach at Pepperdine for a few years before his stint with the Kings. He was horrible at Pepperdine.

Crawford was considering Sacramento because he liked Westphal.

Also if this turns out like the Utah situation, Cousins is next

But I'm pretty sure it's the first time a big man with a 0.321 FG% ran a coach out of town. Sacramento deserves to suck for coddling that idiot.

This is pretty much it. Westphal has never been what I would call a good coach and coming out of retirement after two decades (ish) had failure written all over it.

He didn't exactly retire. He got to run a garbage Pepperdine team in the WCC making decent money and enjoying the Malibu scene. Petrie is a good GM, but he whiffed on Westphal.

Shows what I know I guess ... I had no idea he'd been toiling away at a crappy college team. Kind of makes the hire even stupider.

yeah I have. I lived in Venice for about 3 years after I graduated high school. Nice place ... (Pepperdine that is -- Venice was kind of shithole).

He had Reggie Theus there before. He drafted obvious headcase Cousins. I think Petrie was a good GM a long time ago. He might be over his sell-by-date.
