Like the MLB in Jackie Robinson, should they have numbers retired across the league, like say the number 23 in honor of MJ. Do you guys think they should?
I think they should, but this honor should only be reserved for the few elite players in NBA history.
I think it would get into to much politics. There is no one in basketball history that is as much of a iconic symbol for anything relevant outside of the sports world as Jackie Robinson. The debates would be ridiculous, If you have MJ, why not Wilt. You have Wilt, Now you have to have Bill Russell. How do you not Include Magic and Bird, or for that matter Kareem and Oscar Robertson. What about George Mikan. It could get out of hand.
No, there isn't anyone that is like Jackie in the NBA. MJ isn't like Jackie. Neither are any of the others listed. Jackie didn't get his number retired because he was THAT AMAZING, but because he broke the color barrier.
Wtf no, why would you single out a number to one single player, then never have that number option for other players ever again? I don't mind teams retiring numbers, as that's a small percentage but for every team is ridiculous.
Hell no. Some teams (like the Celtics) go out of hand with retiring numbers anyway. No way in hell this should happen. But don't say it too loud, Stern would probably consider it.
I think retiring numbers is lame anyway...I never gave a hoot what number a player had...just put a guys jersey in the rafters and be done with it.
There is no way this would work. It is an idea to be considered but Road Blocker sums it all up. Too many instances where you couldn't put one player in without another. Good idea for a topic though CambyLand.
In the NHL I believe Wayne's number is retired league-wide...just don't see the point...it's just a number.
No. That's stupid. Teams should only re-tire players that played really well for their team and deserve to get it retired. Plus the fans wouldnt want to look up at retired jerseys that didnt even play for their team. To get your jersey re-tired by a team, you should have to earn it.But actually, thats interesting because in 2003 the Miami Heat re-tired Michael Jordan's jersey out of respect. Their the only team to do that though, and I dont think that will ever happen again in the next decade atleast..

I don't like the idea. But, it seems like some of you think that every retired jersey number by a team can't be used. And that's not true. For example, Vinnie Johnson and Bob Lanier have their jerseys retired by Detroit, numbers 15 and 16, respectively. But that doesn't mean that the whole league can't use those numbers. Just Detroit.
NO WAY. when a player gets his number retired, he is being honored for what he did FOR THAT TEAM. Another team should be able to wear that number.
What happens when the Celtics run out of numbers? lol. They have like 19 retired numbers I think now, and soon to be Paul Pierce..
I don't think so. Alot of guys wear #23 in honor of MJ for example. Even LeBron said he wore it for MJ.That's just as much an honour for a player as getting his jersey retired league-wide

It would be too hard i think. Think of all of the great players that would need to have their numbers retired. And, players wear numbers to kinda show appreciation for older players like lebron wearing it for MJ....I think the system is good the way that it is...
