Nah, I like how it is now, the Jackie robinson was so groundbreaking. Baseball had been around for several decades before a black player was allowed to play in the major leagues. I can't really think of something as groundbreaking as that in the NBA where a player should have his number retired. True, there were great players but I don't think they need their number retired for the entire league.
I think its a bad idea t should only be retired for the teams they played for. there are only 100 numbers available...and when they all get retired what will players wear on their jerseys.

The Celtics already have a lot of numbers retired. They've retired 21 numbers. That a fifth of the available numbers right there.
