In case you hadn't heard both are trying work out sign-and-trade deals because contract negotiations have gone nowhere with both players. The thing is Houston doesn't really have much to interest the Cavs nor Sonics.
Rok, how can you say that Battier right now outweighs Gay's potential?? Gey has the potential to be a superstar, not a solid role player. If that were the case, this wouldn't have been a horrible trade. And Houston lost depth in a place where they needed depth.
Simple, Battier is proven now, Gay is not. Rockets want proven players, and not potential players down the line. And they didn't lose depth, Chuck Hayes was getting playing time over Swift towards the end of the year and now will man most of the minutes behind Howard. Swift did nothing for them in terms of what they thought they signed the summer before. They got out of his contract and are playing a guy who they think will contribute more.
I think people are overrating the talent of Jerry West. The man has made mistakes and will continue to make mistakes. He's had a long history of mistakes. Of course, he's also had successes, which is why he's still around. Nevertheless, as repeated over and over again, Gay is not a sure thing. The Rockets wanted a sure thing. They got a sure thing.
