Well if your show has horrific ratings (as rumored I don't know for sure) then its pretty hard to justify keeping that type of job for the long term.
Dave Smith was actually a pretty funny guy. It took me a long time to appreciate his show, but I really liked it.
I grew to like him a little bit. Hated him at first. He tried so hard to appeal to Portlanders. I give him credit for that, but he's a SoCal guy and that's not going to fly no matter how many times you tell the listeners that your family members went to UofO.
I think, him being a closet Lakers fan and a closet Southern California, is what eventually did him in. As much as it gets old hearing so much pro Blazer talk, I'd rather hear a Blazer fan be critical about the team than a closeted Laker fan trying to be objectionable about the team or try to come off as though you're a fan. I'm not in need of a phony person on the air. And I liked listening to him. now the station has 1 host I stomach listening to and I'm at work during most of his show (and therefore can't/don't listen).
Totally agree with you. If you follow his twitter account, he definitely talked more about the Lakers than the Blazers. Portland will always follow the local talent.
Kind of feel bad for Dave personally though, seems like a nice guy, its not his fault there is some idiot in management that decided it was a smart idea to hire an LA guy to host a Blazer show.
His ratings weren't as bad as canzanos are, Chad in the morning actually gets the best ratings and he SUCKS!
nope, my information comes from my friend that was daves producer. I'll ask him tonight if its written down somewhere
I thought Canzano touted his show as the highest-rated local sports show in Portland. No longer true?
I think the Sports Page is a great show. CIP has a dry sense of humor that I find hilarious. Peterson though, his producer, not so much. He's horrible. He hosted the 5th quarter last night, it was bad.
Yeah I just asked my friend and he said the ratings ranked: Chad Dave Canzano Berger There's documentation but not online, alpha broadcasting keeps the ratings information somewhat private.
This is fascinating to me, because The Game was solidly ahead of The Fan overall in 2010. I think that when they switched to AM, The Game lost most of its listenership. Were it not for the fact that they're the home of the Ducks and Blazers (and the fact that they talk about those two teams 75% of the time), they'd probably be gone by now.
