Seattle stay perfect in CCL, can clinch QF berth in next game

It’s like night and day for the Seattle Sounders in the CONCACAF Champions League.

After losing their first three group matches in the competition last year, Seattle are the only CCL team of 16 to have a perfect record after three matches this time around. Last night they rode a brace from striker Fredy Montero for a 2-1 road win against Herediano in Costa Rica. Watch the highlights here. (VIDEO) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0d

Shoddy finishing costs FC Dallas in 1-1 draw with Tauro FC

FRISCO, Texas — It wasn’t pretty, and in the end it wasn’t the result FC Dallas wanted as visiting Tauro FC of Panama came to Pizza Hut Park and snuck out with a 1-1 draw in CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday night

CCL: Toronto unable to find explanation for blowout loss

Nothing left for TFC but to learn from 4-0 defeat to Pumas, move on

Toronto FC went from one extreme to another.

They shined so brightly in a big 4-2 win over the Columbus Crew this past Saturday in MLS action. But in CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday night, the Reds were duds, getting blown out 4-0 by Mexico’s Pumas UNAM in their Group C match.

SEATTLE – Yosimar Arias’ perfectly placed free kick was enough to give visiting Herediano a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field on Tuesday night in CONCACAF Champions Legue play.

The Costa Rican club earned its first three points of the group stage, while Seattle remain atop Group D with nine points despite the loss

Pumas get two late goals, leave Hyndman's bunch gasping for air

FRISCO, Texas- Playing in their 40th game of the 2011 season, FC Dallas simply did not have enough energy to see another game out Wednesday night.

Pumas scored a pair of late goals on crosses from Emilio Orrantia – who ran freely along the right flank after entering the half at halftime – leaving FC Dallas with seven points in Group C and two games to play.

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica — Pablo Gabas converted a first-half free kick as hosts Liga Deportiva Alajuelense beat the LA Galaxy 1-0 on Wednesday night in CONCACAF CHampions League playto take a commanding perch atop the Group A table.

Gabas and Alajuelense were buoyed by a hostile crowd at the old but sturdy Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto as Liga faithful packed the stadium well before kickoff and greeted the Galaxy with whistles, obscene gestures and vulgar language.

Marosevic, Reds earn draw with Pumas, in good position to advance

TORONTO -- Underhanded and overmatched, Toronto FC kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the CONCACAF Champions League with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Pumas UNAM at BMO Field on Tuesday night.

Peri Marosevic gave Toronto the lead late in the 35th minute before Pumas defender Marco Palacios headed home a goal early in the second half to give the visiting Mexican side a share of the points.

The draw pushed Toronto level on points with FC Dallas for second place in Group C. Pumas moves up into first place in the group with eight points, one more than TFC and Dallas.

Toronto and Pumas, who thumped the Reds 4-0 in Mexico City, each have one more match in group play, while Dallas have two to play, including Wednesday's match away to last-place side Tauro in Panama

Seattle tie Comunicaciones, advance to quarterfinals for 1st time

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – A heroic performance from Osvaldo Alonso gave the Seattle Sounders their first-ever ticket to the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League, as the MLS side clawed to a 2-2 draw against hosts Comunicaciones on Tuesday night.

Needing only a point to get through to the knockout rounds, a pair of goals from the midfielder – the first just before halftime and the second coming in the 90th minute – rescued a hard-fought point.

CCL: FC Dallas in shock after meltdown in Panama City
Hyndman bemoans Hernandez's absence in "bizarre" game

PANAMA CITY, Panama — The expressions on their faces were of shock, and the body language after conceding the third, fourth and fifth goals displayed disbelief.

For FC Dallas, Wednesday night's 5-3 spanking by Tauro FC in CONCACAF Champions League group play was a rude awakening to their maiden experience in the tournament.

The defeat now leaves Dallas with everything to play for as they host fellow MLSers Toronto FC in a winner-takes-all group finale at Pizza Hut Park on Oct. 18

CCL: Galaxy celebrate as Juninho's goal stands up
No linesman's flag to take this one back as LA beat Morelia

Unlike a similar goal two weeks ago in Mexico, this one stood. Juninho’s goal was the decisive strike as the Galaxy toppled Morelia 2-1 and remained alive in the CONCACAF Champions League. Regardless of other results, if the Galaxy beat Motagua in Honduras they will advance to the quarterfinals.

CCL: Colorado hope unlikely victory will spark season
Winless in eight, Rapids' big win in El Salvador may be rallying cry

The Colorado Rapids have been desperately looking for that spark of confidence to reignite their faltering season. With a reserve-laden squad traveling to El Salvador, Wednesday night’s CONCACAF Champions League match at Isidro Metapán didn’t seem like a likely rallying cry.

But the Rapids shocked everyone – including possibly even themselves – with a 3-1 victory and gave the defending MLS Cup champions just the lift they needed given an eight-game winless run in all competitions dating back to August 20

Defending champs Monterrey top Sounders, win Group D

SEATTLE – Abraham Darío Carreño and César Delgado each scored as defending champions Monterrey booked passage into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League with a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field on Tuesday night.

With the result, both teams advance out of Group D with Monterrey (4-2-0) claiming the top spot.

The Mexican giants came into the match needing just a draw to advance to the quarterfinals but were able to ride the contributions of Humberto Suazo to earn all three points. Seattle (3-2-1) had already qualified coming into this match but missed an opportunity to take the top spot in Group D

    Changes Loom In Champions League
Preliminary round to be eliminated from the 2012-13 CCL campaign,
all 24 teams go into groups

NEW YORK - The Preliminary Round will be eliminated from next season's CONCACAF Champions League under a format change announced Thursday by the confederation.

The four-year-old competition will remain a 24-club tournament, but instead of an initial knockout phase of 16 teams, all qualifiers will proceed to a main stage of eight, three-team groups, from which only the winners will advance to the quarterfinals.

The teams will be distributed into three categories for purposes of the draw:

    Category 1:
    Mexico 1 & 2, USA 1 & 2, Costa Rica 1, Guatemala 1, Honduras 1, Panama 1

    Category 2:
    Mexico 3 & 4, USA 3 & 4, Canada 1, Costa Rica 2, El Salvador 1, Honduras 2

    Category 3:
Belize 1 (pending approval of suitable stadium), El Salvador 2, Guatemala 2, Nicaragua 1, Panama 2, Caribbean Football Union 1, 2 & 3

Teams from the same country can’t be drawn into the same group, though thanks to the pan-nationalism of MLS, there is a 75 percent chance that Canada's CCL representative will be drawn into a group with one of its MLS brethren.

According to (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012–13_CONCACAF_Champions_League#Teams) the following clubs have qualified along with what pot they could be in:

    Tigres UANL (Pot A)
Santos Laguna (Pot A if they win the 2012 Clausura, otherwise Pot B)
    Los Angeles Galaxy (Pot A)
    Seattle Sounders (Pot A)
    Houston Dynamo (Pot B)
    Real Salt Lake (Pot B)
Alajuelense (Pot A or Pot B)
Olimpia (Pot A or Pot B)
Municipal (Pot A or Pot C)
Chorrillo (Pot A or Pot C)
Isidro Metapan (Pot B or Pot C)

That's 11 clubs and 5 of them know what pot they will be in.

The winner of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship — contested between Toronto FC, the Montreal Impact, the Vancouver Whitecaps and FC Edmonton of the NASL — could possibly add a fifth MLS club to the party.
