Maybe we should get a coach who runs a pro set.

We have the status as a top team in the nation now... Maybe if we get Peterson or Patterson (Yeah I know he runs a spread but this year he ran a lot of pro style sets) we can lure more higher class recruits to Oregon because we can use an old USC trick... Gateway to the NFL.

The reason Oregon took off is because they went to the spread. Same reason why a lot of 2nd tier programs go to the spread. You don't have the talent level of the top teams, so when you face them you need some kind of way to compete with them, and that's why so many teams have gone to the spread.

It's why some call it a gimmick

So basically, don't change a thing. Keep recruiting the dual-threat QB and run the spread. It's their one chance to compete, as they'll never truly get the kind of recruits a USC/Alabama/Ohio State get.

Harrington didn't run the spread. He won the same amount of BCS games as any of Kelly's QBs, no?

And for you to act like USC or Ohio State has more talent than Oregon is laughable. I don't know what team you root for, but i'm guessing Oregon has shit on it recently.

Yeah, a nice run with Joey, then went back to a 2nd or even 3rd tier program. Their rise back to the top didn't start until Kelly came in in 2007.

And sorry, Oregon doesn't get the recruits that USC and Ohio State get. Chip Kelly is just a genius.

Do you realize how many players those two schools have put in the NFL?

Wait, so what is your argument here? They obviously won plenty in a pro set.

Oregon has been recruiting fine. Chip recruits differently than others, but plenty top prospects every year have Oregon on their list.

Irrelevant. Plus, i'm not talking about the past.

RoyToy i have no idea if you are a college football fan or for how long, but i'm not sure you know how programs work their way into the top tier. Look at Florida in the 90s. Oregon is at the point where an opening is big news, and they can get coaches from other good teams, and they are considered a top program.

To act like a school like that can' t compete without a spread/"gimmick" offense is funny to me, though i suppose i can't argue with an opinion since mine is also that.

This RoyToy guy only comes around on a night like this, then he starts shit with guys who have been posting here for two years and tells people they are out of line. Classy. Like we haven't seen this schtick before....sigh.

I hope our next HC restores order and respect within the organization. Kelly is a hellavu coach and brilliant mind. We'll miss him. But lets right the ship.

And immediately struggled once Joey left. It's harder for teams like Oregon to compete in the pro set consistently because they won't always have Joey Harrington as their QB. Which leads me to my next point...

And why do you think Oregon's recruiting has taken off? Because they want to play in Chip Kelly's system. There are other reasons like winning and Nike, but the system is what draws the kids here, and Oregon's recruiting has never been better. A lot of the best athletes want to play in Kelly's system, that simple.

    Not exactly irrelevant

Oregon gets a lot of good recruits, but it's still not quite like those schools I mentioned. This is mainly on defense, and especially on both sides of the line.

From 97 to 01, The Oregon Ducks had a 23 game home win streak. You might recall, or maybe not, the short season back then...

*disclaimer: I didn't say crap about your 'join' date. I could care less. I've been a Scout member for over ten years and first stepped foot in Donald Barker Stadium Club prob before you were even born. You rarely, if ever, post here on the Duck forum, and now on one of the worst nights, you come here and start shit with three posters who have been here a while - THAT is a fact.

So what you are saying is if we got Chris Petersen, he would be able to do what he did at Boise? Give me a break. Oregon is at a place that as long as it has a good coach, it has the resources to succeed with any offensive style.

That carries no bearing whatsoever in this forum. The Ducks forum has only been around for two years.

No, I don't think Oregon would roll over and die

And a coach like Petersen would be an exception, as he's one of the best in the country ( on the same level as Chip)

But if you don't get Petersen, and you bring in Joe Schmoe, yeah, I don't think a pro offense would consistently result in Oregon being a top 5 program

What I'm trying to say is you have a better chance to win in the spread with a regular coach than you do winning in a pro set with a regular coach.

    Does that make sense?

I mean you can have some special seasons ( see the Bellotti teams), but consistently? Nope.

Perhaps Bellotti saw how much of an impact the spread can have and that's why he with it. Even after things didn't go smoothly with Crowton he still pursued it.

Just pointing out that him trying to paint me as some random is pretty silly.

I've been here longer( assuming 2010 is his real join date), and I've posted in the Ducks forum as well. What he said was stupid.
