Just one year after Twitter declared its allegiance to free speech in a post “The Tweets Must Flow,” and on the day after the first anniversary of Egypt’s revolution, the social network announced it will censor content on a country-specific basis.

To protest #TwitterCensored, some users will go silent and boycott the service in a #TwitterBlackout on Saturday.

Twitter’s new “country withheld content” rules state that if the social network receives a “valid and properly scoped request from an authorized entity” it will block users from a particular country from viewing certain content.

“In our continuing effort to make our services available to users everywhere, if we receive a valid and properly scoped request, it may be necessary to reactively withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time,” Twitter explained.
