Re: UFC on FOX: Evans vs. Davis (Jan.28)

He made Couture look really, really good lol.

Rashad looked pretty good again tonight, kind of an interesting lead-up to Jones because we saw how he handles a guy with great athleticism and length. Davis has a long ways to go and, as I believe you've said before, Speeds, his wrestling isn't translating that well into MMA. Phil was ripping on Rashad's wrestling in pre-fight comments where he said that he was a champion and Rashad only competed at the collegiate level. Rashad outclassed him all around tonight but it should definitely be a red flag for Davis that he was tooled by Rashad so badly in the wrestling department.

Bisping was surprisingly competitive. Can't believe Sonnen is actually fighting Silva in Brazil, thats going to be insane.

I didn't quite understand the logic behind why the UFC put these fights on the first real FOX show though. Evans-Davis, Sonnen-Munoz, and Maia-Bisping are all fine fights from my perspective but why wouldn't they angle to show fights that seem likely to produce more excitement to the non-fan or casual fan and/or more star power? Just seems like they've wasted a hell of a lot of potential fans by doing that one-fight "preview" show, not showing the Bendo-Guida fight on that broadcast, and then making the first "real" card pretty wrestling/grappling heavy. Obviously the UFC can't control what FOX dictates as far as the format of the show and they can't control fighter injuries.

As an MMA fan I do get annoyed when people who don't understand the sport and especially don't understand wrestling/grappling/BJJ/etc. knock the sport for being boring. I understand why it bores them and I understand that educating fans will take a long time. But they'll never bother to learn shit if they're bored and turned off by the product. Put some explosive fights/fighters on these cards and these people will come back for more and learn more about the sport. FOX seems to have a reputation for being fickle and much of the potential audience is already skeptical of the sport. Why not give them some star power and guys who are sure to excite who will bring in the ratings and keep (potential) fans coming back?

Horrible main card, IMO. The under-card was pretty damn good.

Bisping was surprisingly competitive. He nailed Chael a couple of times. This fight just furthered my belief that in the first fight, Anderson was hurt and did want to win with BJJ. If Silva nails him like Bisping did, Chael is going to sleep early.

Early reports have this event topping-out at about 6-million viewers. Doesn't sound like a lot but keep in mind they've been getting about 250,000 PPV sales per event lately.

They need more star power on these cards and more exciting fights.

In fairness Sonnen/Bisping should've been exciting. The other two were always likely to be drawn out fights.

Swapping Barry/Morecraft for Evans/Davis and putting Herman/Struve on this card instead of Maia/Wideman would've been fireworks.

Can't help but think Frankie Edgar is the perfect guy to headline a UFC on FOX. Hes exciting, not that well known, huge potential to get him big exposure and build his brand to Americans. Now that I'm looking at it, that whole UFC 144 card would be money to show on national TV if you want to get people hooked on MMA: Edgar-Bendo, Rampage-Bader, Kongo-Hunt, Pettis-Lauzon. Japan is getting some great fights.

Joey Joe-Joe Beltran has been released following his knockout loss at this event. It is Beltrans fourth loss in five UFC fights. He's the kind of guy they'd probably like to keep around but will have to go and get a couple of wins, maybe return as an injury replacement for his next turn in the bigs. The coffee is for closers (unless you're British).

144,000 watched the UFC on Fuel TV prelims.

Some perspective: 17,000 people ATTENDED the fights.

UFC on Fuel TV is bombing so far.
